????????’?? ???????????? ?????? ???????? ?????? ????????? The First 30 Group logo showcases a distinctive design, featuring an hourglass embedded within the number “30.” This symbol highlights the critical role time plays during a mass attack—especially within the first 30 minutes. In these crucial moments, swift, decisive actions are required, not only from first responders but also from “Immediate Responders”: members of the public who find themselves within the emergency and can contribute to minimizing harm. Understanding roles, applying risk mitigation strategies, and performing life-saving actions are vital to reducing potential casualties. Preparation and training are essential to navigating these first 30 minutes effectively. ???? ???????? ???????????????????????? ???????????????? ???? ?????????????? ???????????? ?????????? ???????????????? ?????????? ???? ??????????????? This week, the St. Louis Police Department released hundreds of pages of reports detailing the 2022 attack at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School, where a student and a teacher lost their lives. Police responded swiftly, advancing toward the threat and ultimately breaching a room in which the suspect had barricaded himself, putting an end to the deadly assault. The report provides critical insights for first responders, school officials, and the public. Key takeaways include: ???????????????? ???????????? ??????????: The assailant forced his way into the school when he, “shot out the lower glass panel and pushed the security lock bar which gave him access into the building.” ????????????: As often occurs in active shooter incidents, many occupants initially experienced denial. Some believed the shooting was only a drill, while others thought it was a prank. ???????????????? ?????? ???????????? ???? ????????????: A security officer responded quickly, running through the halls, banging on doors, and alerting occupants to lock down. School officials also issued an alert over the intercom, using a coded phrase ("Miles Davis is in the building"), which caused some confusion among occupants. Using plain language could have conveyed the threat more clearly. ???????????? ???????? ???????? ?????? ????????????: Some students and teachers escaped past the attacker while he was distracted, trying to clear a weapons malfunction. ????????????????????: Several students fled by jumping from windows. One student fell from the third floor, breaking a bone but surviving. ???????????? ???????????????? ?????????????????? ????????????: Announcements over the police radio instructed officers to move parked vehicles to allow ambulances to transport patients—a common issue during responses to mass casualty incidents. ???????????? ?????????????? ??????????: In at least two phases of the response, officers shot at locks to gain access to the school grounds and into Room #307, where the attacker was barricaded. ???????????????? ?????????????? ????????????: Civilians provided first aid and helped fleeing students find shelter in nearby buildings. ????????????????’?? ????????????????: As seen in many cases, the attacker had thoroughly planned his actions. A manifesto found at the scene contained school schematics and notes on where he intended to attack. A valuable lesson from West Point reminds us that while technology can be helpful, it can also hinder situational awareness.

A useful insight from United States Military Academy at West Point: Over reliance of technology can sometimes work against us, especially when it comes to situational awareness, which is critical when responding to emergencies. It’s important to know where you are. Put down the phone, take a crack at reading paper maps, and continually work on being aware of your surroundings. #activeshootertraining #activeshooter https://lnkd.in/e9g3qcUb
