?? We’re at the end of an insightful and action-packed day exploring wildfire management and forest industry in the South-West of France! ?? We began with an in-depth look at the wood industry and its role in regional development with the GROUPE FP BOIS sawmill ?? ?? Next, we dove into the economic and environmental challenges of managing forested areas near urban environments, with a stop at the Mimizan Golf Club and insights from?Marie-France Delest (COMMUNE DE MIMIZAN)? ??After the speech from Xavier Fortinon (Département des Landes), the afternoon was all about action! We witnessed live demonstrations from SDIS teams on wildfire operational techniques like water pumping, bulldozer use, and fire hose manoeuvres ?? We also saw cutting-edge tech like GIS mapping, drones, and LIDAR in action, as well as essential forest management tools such as scrub clearance and DFCI trail maintenance ?? ?? What a day! This morning, the consortium of FIRE-RES gathered in Bordeaux for an agenda fully dedicated to discovering the specificities of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, home to one of our Living Labs ?? We also learned how our #InnovationActions progressed in the last months and discussed together strategies and best practices to financially support the creation of resilient landscapes against EWEs ??? Not only is it a crucial moment for us to take stock of the project’s developments before diving into our final year of activities – but we wanted to broaden the scope of the conversation by inviting the public to join our event ?? The result was an insightful combination of voices and experiences from across Europe and beyond, aligned with a common mission: improving our territories’ resilience through integrated wildfire management. Let's talk about FIRE-RESults ?? This LiDAR technology that C.N.R. Istitute of Bioeconomy - I.B.E is using to study the fuel load and biomass for fire prevention will feed one of our #InnovationActions, fully dedicated to novel management practices. ??? How do we leverage holistic approaches to generate EWE-resistant landscapes? Outcomes will include management strategies for forests, guidelines for converting forests to woody crops ?? identifying areas where these changes can help prevent wildfires, as well as a method to reduce forest fuel ?? detailing the costs and best practices for doing this across different environments. What's up in the Living Labs? ?? Last Wednesday, the leader of FIRE-RES Living Lab in Chile, Andrés Weintraub, participated in a session of the Chilean Senate Agriculture Committee to discuss the draft law that aims at regulating forest fire prevention in the country. ?? Weintraub emphasized the importance of data-driven strategies and cross-institutional collaboration in reducing the risk of wildfires. Science-based solutions are needed to safeguard Chile's forests in the face of climate change. As we move forward, collaboration between academia, government, and local communities will be key to implementing effective wildfire prevention and response measures. What's up in The Living Labs???The Bulgarian LL successfully concluded a two-day training in Kazanlak on GIS and Spatial Data Modeling for forest fire management. ??With over 20 participants, including foresters, firefighters, and municipal representatives, the training focused on the use of GIS technology to improve forest fire prevention, optimize response strategies, and protect high-value areas.
