Fire Department of Montgomery Township

On January 24, 2025, the fire department responded to a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center for a fire alarm activation for a broken sprinkler pipe. The broken pipe caused extensive damage, making the facility unhabitable and necessitating the evacuation of all 144 patients. Public Safety resources and private ambulance providers responded to the facility to assist the Fire Department and the Montgomery Township Office of Emergency Management with evacuating and relocating this vulnerable population. In all, various public and private resources from Southeastern PA and the NJ EMS Taskforce were utilized to transport patients to several facilities across the Southeastern Region. This operation had several moving parts, and it took the team approximately 13 hours to evacuate the patients to suitable receiving facilities. A post-incident critique was held on February 13, 2025, with responding organizations to discuss the incident and recommendations for future responses to similar incidents. It was a full day of Emergency Management Training for township staff in Montgomery Township! This morning the Office of Emergency Management hosted G 0404 NIMS Overview for Senior Officials taught by Dave Camarda. Township staff spent the afternoon reviewing the Township Emergency Operations Plan and the new Montgomery Township Preparedness Response and Emergency Platform (M-PREP) powered by GIS. The department hosted training with Deputy Assistant Chief Frank Leeb (Retired) from New York City Fire Department (FDNY). The afternoon training, Cornerstones of Leadership for Real World Success, On and Off the Fireground, was for department members and was held at Battalion 1. The evening training, Common Occupancy, Uncommon Response, was a Regional Training held at the Montgomery Township Community and Recreation Center. Over 100 firefighters were in attendance for the evening training. We want to thank Chief Leeb for a fantastic training experience. His decades of experience, ability to engage with his audience, and passion for the fire service made for an excellent training experience. Did you know that Civil War and Battle of Gettysburg hero General Hancock was born in Montgomery Township, PA? General Winfield Scott Hancock was born on February 14, 1824, in Montgomeryville, PA. General Hancock was a war hero at the Battle of Gettysburg, where he was injured. He was the presidential candidate for the Democratic Party in 1880. General Hancock is buried in Norristown. The Fire Department of Montgomery Township celebrates Montgomery Township as the birthplace of General Hancock. We have adopted the General as our company mascot and will feature him in some departmental materials and clothing. The Montgomery Twp. Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4890 sells unique challenge coins featuring the "The General." Local artist and Montgomery Township resident Veronica Utz designed the General on his Horse for the fire department! D.J.B. Specialties, Inc. located in Montgomery Township, placed the image on departmental materials. A mobile replica of The Wall That Heals will be coming to Montgomery Township, PA this July. This memorial is a mobile replica of The Wall That Heals in Washington D.C. and honors the thousands of service members who lost their lives during the Vietnam War and the millions of soldiers who served. This replica is owned and maintained by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. The Fire Department of Montgomery Township is proud of our Vietnam Veterans and all those who served in the defense of our nation.
