The advertising and agency business model is broken! Michael Farmer shares important facts about the industry. Did you know that the amount of creative outputs per creative has increased drastically since 1983? And that 21 of the top 50 advertisers have seen nearly flat sales growth over the past 13 years, yet significant growth in share price? But how do we improve the top line? According to Jo Kinsella of XR Extreme Reach, "We have over 55 agencies supporting one beauty brand, how do we figure out how to measure results? How can we be sure the right creative is matched to the right person at the right time?" And Michael Farmer adds, "We've seen 300% increase of creative deliverables since 2009, but the economy has only grown 30%. That's a sh*te situation." Sabrina Traskos of AstraZeneca highlights how brands get media budget, then find their agency partner and reverse engineer the plan to meet the budget. And that approach only achieves the budget, not the desired results. Scopes of work are a one-way street. They are not tied to brand objectives. The agencies are doing the work. And it's not having an impact on sales... So, what's the solution? We have to break the existing bad behaviors. Go back to the days of healthy relationships focused on the health of both agency and the brand. We should be optimizing for creative and audience on the same team.
