International Women’s Day has been celebrated since the early 1900s, making women’s achievements visible, raising awareness of discrimination, and making the world more inclusive and equal. This week, to cherish this important theme day on 8 March, we share five inspiring career stories. Our first career story introduces Riina Palanne, VP, Business Control. Riina started at Finnair on Valentine's Day 2017. She had lived and worked abroad for several years, and upon returning to Finland, she was yearning for something particularly “Finnish” in her life. An open position at Finnair matched Riina's wishes and skills, and she also fell in love with Finnair's sense of community, fast pace, and the opportunity to constantly learn something new. After eight years, these are still the same things that make her happy at her job. ? At Finnair, Riina leads the Business Control team, whose main task is to produce financial information that helps Finnair and its various units make the best possible decisions. Riina says that the team is quite female-dominated, and Riina is proud to be able to contribute to promoting equality and supporting women’s advancement in their careers. “I'm proud of my amazing team daily and can only admire their professionalism. My team members have a magical ability to translate real-world events and issues into financial figures, and vice versa,” Riina says. ? During her career, Riina has held multiple financial positions in different industries. She's always said "yes" to new opportunities and responsibilities, even when they seemed scary at first. Instead of five-year plans or specific goals, learning and challenging herself in her work has always been the most important thing for Riina. ? For her 15-year-old self, she would tell to be brave. “And I couldn’t resist the temptation to remind my teenage self to wear a hat in the winter and sunscreen in the summer,” Riina adds. Riina thanks the women at Finnair for all the support, lessons learned and memorable moments during her career.

Over to you, Emmi! ??: Who are you and what do you do at Finnair? "Hello! My name is Emmi Sallinen and I work as Digital Product Lead, Data in our Digital Channels team. My main objective is to improve and enhance our data capabilities in digital channels leading to better customer experience. This includes for example data collection, utilizing the data, AB testing, personalization and consent management. My current focus is on finnair.com booking experience." ??: How long have you worked here and what made you apply? "I will soon have my 7-year anniversary at Finnair! I have been always fascinated by the airline industry. It was literally a match made in heaven when I was looking for new opportunities while Finnair had an interesting position open. I started as a Scrum Master in 2018, but I have continued my journey at Finnair through different positions." ??: What do you like the most about working at Finnair? "Well, this is easy. My colleagues at Finnair are the best. When you work for an airline, you usually have a special place in your heart for travelling and the industry. That feeling combines us and keeps us going together even through the toughest times." ??: What’s your favourite Finnair destination and why? "I have two totally different favorites. I love the sun, sand, and snow. So, my favorites are Kittil? and Bangkok. Levi in Kittil? is my favorite skiing destination in Finland, but Thailand is my all-time favorite for a warm beach holiday." ??: Can you tell us something most people don’t know about you? "I have two hobbies, riding and ballet. When I travel, I like to try these hobbies also at destinations. Just last week I took a ballet class in Singapore, and I have been riding a horse on the beaches in Mauritius and Thailand." ??: What tip would you give to someone considering a career in aviation? "Just apply when you see anything interesting available, don’t hesitate. Aviation has a huge variety of different positions, and we come from all possible backgrounds."

Did you know that you can make a big difference in reducing the carbon emissions of your flights? We are working hard to drive climate action, but small changes in how you travel can help too. Here’s some expert tips from our Senior Vice President, Sustainability, Eveliina Huurre. 1?? Choose direct flights? The most direct route is often the most sustainable! Use tools like Google Flights to compare emissions and select the best option. You can even calculate your emissions and contribute to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or certified climate projects when booking your next Finnair flight. 2?? Pre-order your meals? Pre-ordering meals helps reduce food waste and the weight of the plane, which lowers fuel consumption. Less weight = less fuel = fewer emissions! 3?? Pack light? Packing light can save fuel. Imagine if our every passenger in 2024 packed just 1kg less? It could have saved enough fuel to fly from Helsinki to New York 21 times! 4?? More sustainable travel with longer trips If you can, combine work trips with a bit of leisure and sightseeing to reduce the number of flights. Eveliina even manages to pack for a one-week work trip with only hand luggage!
