On 1 August, the EU’s #AIAct came into force. The landmark rule sets out a comprehensive regulatory framework for #AI applications across the #EU. So far, industry responses have been mixed. Whilst the legislation will primarily target US #tech giants, other businesses will be affected by the new rules. The EU has adopted a risk-based approach, meaning all AI applications will be measured differently depending on the level of risk they pose. Whilst there are various ‘transition periods,’ failing to comply could lead to serious fines in reach of €20 million or four percent of annual global turnover. Humans aren’t perfect, so AI trained on our data isn’t either. Bias in AI is a real concern and this has big impacts for diversity and inclusion. This was the key discussion point at last night's?London Tech Week?panel. According to General Purpose AI Training, the technology ’is just a reflection of us humans’ and I completely agree. We need to have many more conversations to ensure tech is fair and inclusive for everyone.

Mental health awareness week might be behind us but it's important that everybody in PR takes the time to prioritise it all year-round. ? Our Thomas Roden, MCIPR, MPRCA offered some thoughts to PRmoment on how PR and communications professionals can take steps to tackle poor mental health. While we take every step to fully support every member of our team, not every change needs to be cultural or policy-led — sometimes, the small step of practitioners switching off can have the biggest benefit. ?
