On June 8th, 2021, our five (5) year old Frenchie, Finley, passed away after battling Cushing’s disease and seizures due to a tumor in his brain. During his final weeks, Finley could barely walk, was taking 20 pills a day, and was experiencing 20 to 30 seizures a day. It was heartbreaking. Although we had the best team of doctors on the island, no veterinary hospital in Hawai’i administers radiation due to a lack of specialized professional and treatment equipment. We had to fly to the mainland to get him treated, but due to COVID and other limitations, it was too late. Finley was an integral part of our family. In fact, he made us a family. On his last day, we promised Finley that we will continue to celebrate his life and allow his story to bring smiles and comfort to families. While still in progress, we wish to share the Finley Fort Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to: 1) Help families in need of financial assistance with taking care of their pets. 2) Provide scholarships to vet/tech students to further specialize and encourage them to come back to Hawai’i and 3) Help practitioners gain access to new and advanced technology and treatments. This initiative was created to help ease the emotional and financial burden pet owners face during one of the most difficult moments in their journey—saying goodbye. The passing of a pet is a profound loss, often equated to losing a family member. Yet, discussions about end-of-life care for pets are often avoided until the moment arrives, leaving families unprepared for both the emotional and financial weight of the process. Betty’s Memorial Assistance Fund ensures that pet owners don’t have to face this alone by covering costs associated with euthanasia, cremation, and memorial packages through veterinary clinics. “Nobody welcomes a pet into their life thinking about the day they’ll have to say goodbye,” said Constancio Paranal III, Co-Founder and Director at the Finley Fort Foundation. “Betty’s Memorial Assistance Fund was created to honor the bond between pets and their families by providing comfort and dignity in their final moments.” A Legacy of Love Betty’s story is one of unwavering companionship, love, and loyalty. We are proud to have supported pets and families, providing vital resources to keep pets and their loved ones together during challenging times. This achievement underscores our commitment to fostering a thriving pet care community in Hawai?i. This year also saw the launch of the #GuardiansofFinleyFort, a transformative campaign focused on sustainable fundraising and community-building. Alongside this, we introduced the #BettysMemorialFund — a new pillar dedicated to grief and loss support, offering financial support to help pet owners memorialize their beloved companion. This was developed in honor of Betty — the co-founder’s beloved feline who passed on Christmas Day. These initiatives, combined with the 2024 Class of #FinleyFortAmbassadors, have strengthened our mission and expanded our reach. As we celebrate National Adopt-a-Dog Day and National Dog Week, it’s a wonderful reminder of the incredible difference we can make in the lives of dogs who need loving homes. Franklin came into our lives through the Hawaiian Humane Society’s adoption program—a decision that transformed not only Frankie’s life but ours as well. Adopting him gave us the chance to provide him with a safe, loving environment, and in return, he has filled our home with joy and companionship. At the Finley Fort Foundation (FFF), we are deeply committed to promoting the well-being of pets like Frankie. Our mission is to support activities that ensure dogs, and all pets, live longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
