Yesterday, I was in the airport security line and saw a guy in front of me who was all over the place. He was flustered, trying to gather his stuff, and dropped his phone. He went through security only to realize he still had his belt on, then came back and dropped something else. Everyone was staring, frustrated that he was holding up the line. Instead of getting annoyed, I gave him a quick smile and said, "It's OK." He seemed to calm down a bit after that. Pressure impacts people in different ways. As a leader, we need to recognize the difference between pressure that motivates and pressure that debilitates. When people are flustered and start making mistakes, adding more pressure doesn't help—it only makes things worse. The next time you see someone on your team struggling, pause. Maybe what they need isn’t more pressure, but a simple reminder that it’s okay to take a breath and reset.
