One of the things that might surprise you when walking around the streets of Belgrade, Serbia, is the street signs, road names and other pieces of information around the city. Why? Because they often contain Cyrillic Serbian, Latinised Serbian, and English - all on the same sign. It's an interesting example of the impact of societal change on language - or, how language reflects societal change. Read the article in the comments to understand more about why this is the case, and what is being said and done! Protecting linguistic heritage and diversity is important, but doing so can be an extremely complex task. How do you think individuals and governments can help? #language #cyrillic #latin

For those English-language learners interested in international policymaking and migration, use this article to develop your subject-specific vocabulary and knowledge. In light of the climate crisis, migration within and between countries can be seen as a solution to localised impacts of climate change. Some regions will be impacted only in certain seasons, so the managed facilitation of seasonal migration flows could provide respite and stability to affected populations. This reconceptualisation could prove particularly useful in the future! #english #languages #internationalpolicy
Migration must be seen as a solution to achieve sustainable development and mitigate the challenges of human displacement. In the latest issue of Wilson Quarterly, IOM Director General Amy Pope brings this narrative forward, and the stronger communities it would lead to. https://www.iom.int/ZSv

The world today is competitive, and to compete on the international stage it is important to have diverse language skills.? This, combined with the fact that languages are learned over long periods of time, means that you’ll likely be learning multiple languages at once. Learning one language is tough.? Two?? Three?? The difficulty when learning multiple languages culminates and will really test your organisational capacity and motivation.? That’s why you need to do it in a smart way: think about your goals, strategise and manage your time and motivation wisely.? We’ve just published an article on our blog which provides some applicable advice if you’re embarking on this difficult but rewarding journey, linked in the comments.? Here are some of the highlights: 1. Choose your languages carefully Try not to learn languages that are very similar to one another.? That means Italian and Spanish, Norwegian and Swedish, and many other pairs.? Additionally, stagger the levels.? Don’t start two languages at the same time if you are able: get to upper intermediate in one before starting the next. 2. Differentiate where possible Make it easier for your brain to differentiate between the languages you’re learning.? Font colour, study spaces, and music can all help with this. 3. Ladder! For the really efficient learning of multiple languages, use one more advanced language to learn a less advanced one, rather than using your mother tongue to learn both.? This reinforces vocabulary in the stronger language while developing the weaker one. 4. Stay organised Make sure you remain organised!? Learning one language alongside work and study is one organisation challenge, but multiple?? You need to step up. 5. Create and maintain motivation Find different methods to create motivation for the different languages you’re learning. Find out more on the points above with the blog post, linked in the comments.? Learning multiple languages is a tough journey, but a highly rewarding one for those people with the commitment and organisational capacity to do it. Let us know about your experiences learning multiple languages in the comments below!? We are really interested in hearing about your multiple-language-learning experiences. #english #languages #languagelearning #anglais #inglés #английÑкий

There are many challenges that international students face along their university journeys, but one of the most fundamental challenges has to be the actual process of finding and applying to their university of choice. There are many more hoops to jump through for international students, from visa applications and funding complexities to adjusting to cultural differences in a new place.? We’ve just published an article outlining some of the difficulties international students face concerning the English language, and some helpful advice, too (link in the comments). One of the 5 challenges we speak about is the arduous process of getting through the IELTS, TOEFL or another English-language exam.? They are tough!? Particularly when you’ve got a lot riding on it, as you do with university applications.? Here’s some advice for those specifically taking the IELTS to apply for university: 1. Take your time!? You don’t want to rush the process, as even if your level of English is strong, taking an exam is a stressful environment and you really need to get to know the structure. 2. Don’t forget that there is the One Skill Retake in many countries (link in the comments), which allows IELTS students to retake one of the four exam components if they need a higher score.? It means you spend less money and can focus on what you really need to, in the case that you don’t pass with the band score you need the first time. 3. Stay motivated!? Visualise the university that you’re applying to, put a picture of the campus as your laptop background, think of the interesting experiences you’ll have.? IELTS is a tough process and it can be quite long, so you need to find ways to stay motivated.? You can stay motivated with interesting free English-language materials on our school’s blog, too! Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity for personal, academic, professional and social development, and we’re sure you’ll love discovering more of the world.? Good luck! #english #universityapplications #masters #esl #ielts
