Representation matters and it always will

关于我们

The Filipino Curriculum Project, a student-led initiative, aims to integrate a curriculum reflecting Filipino history and culture into Hawai'i's education system. Founded by Punahou senior Marissa Halagao, the project addresses the lack of Filipino history in Asian history courses. The curriculum focuses on Ethnic Identity, Cultural Connection, Historical Context, and Filipinos in Hawai'i, emphasizing the theme of identity. It will be an elective within the Hawai'i Department of Education and, for the first time in the U.S., a high school social studies course dedicated to Filipino Studies will be offered. Farrington High School and Waipahu High School students can register for the course in Fall 2023, with teaching commencing in Fall 2024. The goal is to expand it to all Hawai'i public schools and promote Filipino representation in education and children's literature, raising awareness nationwide. This project is a testament to the dedication of the next generation and seeks to empower future generations of Filipinos and promote cultural awareness.
