Why are restaurants suddenly more "productive" than they have been in decades? A new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research highlights a surprising shift: after 30 years of stagnation, US restaurant labor productivity surged over 15% during COVID, and it hasn’t gone back down. The biggest factors? - Shorter customer dwell times. - More takeout. - More digital orders. - Less lingering. At the same time, restaurant operators are facing some of the toughest margin pressures in history: - Labor costs are up. - Food costs are through the roof. - Profit margins, already thin, are getting squeezed even further. What’s the takeaway? Optimizing your digital strategy is no longer optional, it’s essential. The shift toward off-premise dining isn’t just a pandemic trend, instead this is a structural change in the industry. Restaurants deserve to freely choose who delivers the first-party orders generated on their own website and app. Our founder,?Scott Landers, P.E. was quoted in the The Wall Street Journal article by Heather Haddon breaking the news that Uber is suing DoorDash for alleged anti-competitive tactics. "Scott Landers, a former restaurant owner who runs the Figure 8 consulting firm for eateries, said some of his clients have run into pushback from DoorDash when they sought to use Uber for direct delivery. Landers said DoorDash would seek to change the terms of their marketplace service if a restaurant used Uber for direct delivery." “Even increasing a commission by 2 or 4 percentage points is a big hit,” Landers said.
