“Food is not an elected add-on for climate, future proofing our planet. It is a requisite.” - Sara Farley, VP of the global food portfolio at Rockefeller Foundation Other than air and water, food is our most critical need - yet, less than 3%?of all public climate finance goes into food systems, even though food systems make up?about 1/3?of global emissions.?? Per Bloomberg Green's recent newsletter: - Small family farmers grow?over 33% of the world’s food?and up to 80% in regions like Asia and Africa. - Only 14% of the $9.1 billion in international public climate finance for agriculture and land use was targeted at activities relevant to?these farmers, according to analysis by?Climate Focus. 733 million people faced hunger in 2023, while we produce food for nearly 16 billion people annually; with only ~9B people in population. There is plenty of surplus food present on farms and within tourism; we simply need infrastructure + legislation to support moving this food to the places most in need - and to support our beloved farmers in regeneration + climate adaptation practices. We need global + local finance to prioritize investment in hands in the soil, those that listen to the earth's rhythms and are focused on regeneration, as these dollars are clearly needed to ensure resilience in our convenience dependent culture and ever-heating world. Check out a few amazing organizations doing incredible surplus food rescue work; such as The Farmlink Project, The Eco-Friendly Mobile Farm Stand Project, Copia, Fight2Feed, City Harvest, FoodRecovery.org, Careit, and figure out ways in which you can support your local farmers + farmers markets; enabling the re-routing of high quality food from tourism and farms into your own local community. Food is a deep source of nourishment, connection and culture - may it continue to connect us as we evaluate and envision a more optimal and equitable food system, moving into these important coming years. The Eleventh Annual Fight2Feed Thanksgiving Turkey Drive is Off to an Incredible Start! We’ve already collected 161 turkeys and we’re aiming for 200+ turkeys this year—each 20 lbs or larger. With the deadline approaching on 11/18, we’re getting closer to our goal! On 11/23, we’ll start cooking from our McCormick Place East Kitchen to serve 1,600 + meals to those in need. Celebrating 10 Years of Fight2Feed 10.13.2024?? A decade ago today, Fight2Feed served its very first meals on the streets of Chicago. We started by delivering 1,004 hot breakfasts to our friends in the Uptown neighborhoods. With the support of the Hard Rock Cafe Chicago, which donated their kitchen space, and the help of 110 volunteers, we cooked from scratch and brought meals to those who needed them most. Our mission was simple: to share meals with our hungry neighbors, planning monthly events to serve 600-1,000 meals. Now, 10 years later, we’ve grown exponentially. Today, we share over 5,000 meals every month, and our work has expanded to include Food Rescue, saving nearly 6 million pounds of food. We now partner with 27 organizations and serve communities across four Illinois counties. Our impact has also expanded beyond Chicago—we now have a presence in Atlanta, Kansas City, Massachusetts, and Florida. Operating out of the McCormick Place kitchen, we rescue 100,000+ pounds of food per month, distributing 25,000 pounds weekly to our partners. Through it all, we’ve remained a 100% volunteer-run operation. Today, we pause to reflect and honor the incredible #EssentialVolunteers who have supported our mission over the past decade. Their unwavering commitment has been a beacon of hope, proving that even in darkness, there is light if we choose to seek it. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey—those who volunteer, donate, bake, partner, and lead with Fight2Feed. Your dedication is the reason we are here today, and as we look to the future, we hope you’ll continue to walk alongside us. When we work along side each other to bring the community closer together it becomes a symphony of good things. Today one of our volunteers who traveled a long way to support #Fight2Feed was able to join the kitchen prep with Chef Victor Martinez and team of UNITE HERE Chicago Hospitality Institute in the Fight2Feed McCormick Place kitchen! Today they are preparing the nosh with rescued food from #Fight2Feed to showcase at tomorrow's In Culinary Inc. Conversations event with Chef Won Kim at The Boelter Companies Chicago! Did you know Fight2Feed began a "Learning While You Give" program during the pandemic in 2020? We brought on culinary inclined high school students to help us in the kitchen while they learned from chefs and industry leaders all while serving our community in need. In 2022 we partnered with Illinois Restaurant Association and their ProStart Program to continue and streamline our passion to incorporate the Culinary Youths of tomorrow to share how important it is to rethink food waste and what it means to creatively repurpose food. Check out these #Prostart Students in the McCormick Place who came to learn how #Fight2Feed repurpose and plan healthy meals for our community during the #DNC week. We loved seeing their creative approaches to food and what and exciting feeling seeing the sparks in their eyes.
