This past weekend, news broke that the series of books from Girls Who Code, which chronicle the adventures of a group of young girls in a coding club at their school, had been banned in a school district in Pennsylvania and added to PEN America's Index of School Book Bans. To say that I am deeply troubled by this development would be an understatement. As the CEO of Girls Who Code, an educator, and a mother, I understand firsthand the transformative power of books—they teach vital life skills, foster empathy, and inspire young minds to envision new and daring possibilities. At Girls Who Code, we believe in the maxim "you can't be what you can't see," and our books exemplify this principle. Every day, we strive to empower young individuals who may not have considered themselves in STEM fields to utilize coding to benefit themselves and their communities, to make a positive impact. The banning of our books, along with the 1,651 other titles banned this year, represents a setback in our collective efforts to create a more diverse and equitable world. It sends a discouraging message to our students: you are not welcome here; your representation does not matter; your knowledge is inconsequential. It encourages conformity and discourages innovation. Nevertheless, we refuse to be deterred. We understand that our mission to bridge the gender gap in technology is crucial. In the coming years, we anticipate significant growth in tech-related job sectors such as national security, finance, healthcare, and voting. Our girls have every right to be leaders in these fields, from entry-level positions to the C-suite. Diversity of experiences and perspectives is the cornerstone of a dynamic workforce across all industries, and our nation will benefit immensely from it.
