A subtle, yet brilliant engineering adjustment! Check it out?? Undercuts increase design complexity, which adds costs to injection molding. But for Purcell, it was worth the tradeoff. The original design for Purcell’s bulk food dispenser called for a custom-designed and manufactured sheet metal spring. After consulting with Fictiv’s manufacturing experts, the company realized that a design implementing undercuts would enable them to utilize COTS springs instead – and the marginal increase in molding costs would be far less than the difference between COTS and custom springs.
