Congrats to the team of First Watch Restaurants for this major milestone: $1 billion in annual revenue. I first wrote about First Watch in early 2006 — even a few months before someone named Chris Tomasso was named CMO. I met and interviewed the late, great and amazing co-founder and CEO Ken Pendery. We sat in his office. It was an office building behind the LWR Publix. Ken's office was small - not your standard bigwig CEO office. Small enough that I sat on a chair at the side of the desk, not in front of it. Ken, I think, was feeling out if he could trust me. He was nice, polite and thoughtful - but a bit guarded talking to a (then) young reporter. I've since wrote about Ken and Chris and Lilah Taha-Rippett and Laura Sorensen and Matthew Eisenacher and other FW leaders dozes of times. Edited dozens of other stories from Business Observer reporters. Attended a groundbreaking and grand opening for a new HQ in Manatee County. Wrote about many other milestones — including the company's October 2021 IPO. I once had the privilege of attending a FARM class Ken taught, sitting in the back among 30 FW managers from all over the country. I've also gotten to know several other FWers - chief among them my friends Eleni Kouvatsos Gates and Renee Hood, SHRM-SCP and Hunter Carpenter, MA, APR. And new contacts like Jenni Izzo Glester and Mackenzie Garrett. Oh yeah - The Lakewood Ranch Market Street FW (my first watch :) has become a go-to place for friends, family out of towners, meetings and story interviews. And in a pretty cool memory I took my son there every Halloween morning before I took him to elementary school down the road for the school's Halloween parade. (He's 16 now.) One theme in my reporting and customering of First Watch stands out: kindness. They stick to their values, they find a way to get to yes (with a few no comments when I got pushy) and they follow through with commitments. All together, I'm proud to have been able to share First Watch stories for 20 years. See you at $2 billion!
