?? FHU College of Business Alumni Spotlight: Accounting Here is what they say about their?experience at FHU and how it helped them with their?current jobs. ?? Jacob Rich: “My current job as a Financial Analyst at Nissan involves preparing journal entries, performing account reconciliations, and analyzing the work of others to identify and resolve errors. The College of Business at Freed-Hardeman provided me with the broad degree of accounting and finance knowledge that I needed to be able to understand the work I do and grow in my role at Nissan." ?? McKinley Phillips: "While my job today does not quite look like what we were tested on in the classroom, what job does? The soft skills, communication with leadership, and problem-solving skills that I developed during my time at Freed have prepared me for my career. The leadership opportunities through social clubs and the direct communication we had with our teachers allowed Freed Alumni to stand out in a crowd and be seen as highly professional at a young age in the workforce. The basic technical skills are important, but most are learned on the job; the soft skills are what companies are really looking for, and Freed prepares you for that." ?? Samuel Matthews, MBA Matthews:?“I work in Public Accounting (Audit side) here in Memphis for the City’s largest locally-owned firm. Without a doubt, Freed-Hardeman prepared me for the technical aspects of my career, as well as provided me with the resources to improve my soft skills and jumpstart opportunities for pursuing CPA licensure. For anyone considering a collegiate career at FHU, I could not recommend enough!” Thank you, Brandon Lanciloti, DBA, MBA, CPA, CFE, for leading the accounting major at FHU.

?? Alumni answers! Check out Elijah S. Ellis's answers about what a real job is like, how he got there, and advice he has for current students. ? Current Position & Company: Textbook Manager at Textbook Brokers ? Career Path: "My career began as a student worker at Textbook Brokers, and after graduation, I transitioned to a role with Carnival Cruise Line. In October, I decided to return home to pursue my MBA and gain further management experience in preparation for a future position with Carnival. Shortly thereafter, an opportunity arose with the company, and they reached out to ask if I would be interested in the role.? ? FHU Experience: "One of the key lessons I learned during my time at FHU was the importance of paying attention and actively listening to the real-life stories shared by professors. While textbook information is undoubtedly essential, the personal experiences and insights that professors offer provide invaluable knowledge that will be highly relevant as you navigate your own career." ? Advice for Students:? "There are many niche and unique career opportunities that people often overlook. Find something that excites and inspires you and commit fully to it. Success comes when you're passionate about what you do and are willing to put in the hard work to achieve it."

Thank you, Leah Gray, DHS, for bringing these learning opportunities to our students. Thank you to the student volunteers Kaylee Sexson, Audrey Orton, and Jaden Bracken for participating in the West Tennessee SHRM conference roleplay. #FHUcollegeofbusiness
This week was eventful with my students engaging in valuable learning experiences. We kicked off with a group roleplay session at WTSHRM, focusing on handling employee crisis situations. Participants gained insights on de-escalation techniques crucial in such scenarios. Following this, Kent Carter, a Career Coach, Consultant, and seasoned HR Director, shared his expertise with FHU Capstone classes. Kent emphasized the significance of delivering results and recognizing competition within the professional realm. One key takeaway from his session resonates strongly: "Don't mistake effort for results."

? ?? The FHU Hatchett Investment Team is excited to share updates for the Spring 2025 semester. The team is pleased to welcome six new analysts: Julieth Rivera Morales, Mia Griffin, Kyle Endsley, Jack Zondervan, Carson Kizer, and Ericka Montenegro. They join?the returning team members?Thabang Machaka, Daniel Grooms, Rylee Baker, Aidan Harrison, Riya Key, and Jonathan Timmer. The team has been diligently analyzing the equity market, incorporating insights from last semester’s board meeting into its strategy. They continue to focus on identifying companies with a strong track record of financial performance and effective management while maintaining a 5-year investment horizon. This disciplined approach has already led to the team’s first transaction of the semester, increasing its position in Daqo New Energy (DQ). Additionally, the team is closely monitoring ongoing policy developments from Washington, particularly regarding tariff initiatives. These policies contribute to market volatility and present potential opportunities for targeted investment. ??
