Today is World Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. This is a difficult topic for far too many people. Yet, it remains important to highlight both to support parents in our lives who have lost a child and to emphasize the need for proactive policy to decrease infant mortality rates. According to the CDC, North Carolina ranks 41st in the country in infant mortality. Our state has improved in recent years; however, significant work must continue to ensure new and expecting parents and their children have access to the care they deserve.

October 10th is World Mental Health Day. This day "provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide." "Mental health is a universal human right. Everyone, whoever and wherever they are, has a right to the highest attainable standard of mental health. This includes the right to be protected from mental health risks, the right to available, accessible, acceptable, and good quality care, and the right to liberty, independence and inclusion in the community." World Health Organization In a world where a lot may seem very heavy right now, it's vital to make mental health a priority. #WMHD2024 #WorldMentalHealthDay #WearGreen

This year’s Bernstein Event was one to remember! On the heels of Hurricane Helene, we were honored to host NCDHHS Secretary Kody Kinsley, who gave a detailed status report on the relief efforts underway. HHS Regional Director Antrell Tyson also gave a perspective on federal support in the wake of the natural disaster. Read more about our two featured speakers’ remarks, our 2024 award recipients, and the 2024 Bernstein Fellowship graduation!

We're so thankful for the opportunity to see Dr. Barbara Pullen-Smith at our office yesterday. Dr. Pullen-Smith wasn't able to be at our Annual Bernstein Event last week to receive the 2024 Jim Bernstein Community Health Career Achievement Award, so yesterday was a fantastic opportunity to give her the award, catch up, and talk about her travels! Congratulations on the award Dr. Pullen-Smith!

This is so important. This time of year is always an important time to remember that resources are available to help, regardless of who you are or where you live. But in the wake of a disaster like Hurricane Helene, mental health supports are all the more important. If you or a loved one are struggling after witnessing Hurricane Helene, be sure to check out this list of resources: https://lnkd.in/essMdiQF
Depression is common after a traumatic event, and our WNC communities are facing overwhelming challenges as they navigate the effects of Hurricane Helene. If you or someone you know is in need of mental health support during this challenging time, resources are available to help. https://lnkd.in/essMdiQF Depression is a common mental health concern that affects persons of all genders, ages and backgrounds. We invite you to reach out, share your story and get educated throughout the month of October, and specifically during World Mental Health Day on October 10th.

Another Bernstein Event is in the books! Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's event a success! The 2024 Bernstein Event certainly struck a different chord, as we shifted our focus to recognize the devastation of Hurricane Helene and funnel donations to community-based organizations across Western North Carolina. We want to give a special shoutout to NCDHHS Secretary Kody Kinsley for giving us a detailed update about the status of health care infrastructure across Western North Carolina and ongoing efforts to restore access points for vital health resources. HHS Regional Director Antrell Tyson also joined to give an update on the federal response to the disaster. In the coming weeks and months, financial support for local organizations will continue to be incredibly important. Organizations with expertise in everyday needs like housing, food access, and other social supports will be critical in efforts to recover and rebuild. Our program, the North Carolina Rural Health Association, has compiled a county-by-county resource of community-level organizations that we are certain could use your support. We will continue to refine and update this list, and we encourage everyone to find an organization to support financially as they work to recover from this immense disaster. https://buff.ly/3N6SbGU

Our hearts go out to everyone personally dealing with the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Our program, the North Carolina Rural Health Association, is working to coordinate a county-by-county list of resources providing direct aid on the ground. We hope this serves as both a resource for those in the disaster zone as they begin to regain access to the internet and as a place for those of us outside the path of the hurricane to find relief organizations to support with donations. https://buff.ly/3N6SbGU
