  • ??Lessons in Healthcare Leadership: John Haupert, CEO of Grady Health System What does it take to lead one of the busiest trauma and safety-net hospitals in the country? For healthcare administration students, understanding leadership at high-impact hospitals like Grady Health System provides invaluable lessons. Since 2011, John Haupert has served as CEO of Grady, guiding the system through financial stabilization, operational expansion, and a mission-driven approach to care. Haupert’s career path—from orderly in an emergency department to CEO of a major academic health system—offers important takeaways for future healthcare leaders. Key Leadership Lessons from John Haupert ?? 1. Leadership Begins with Service Haupert embraces servant leadership, believing that leaders must meet people where they are. He stresses the importance of understanding the challenges frontline workers face and ensuring they have the support they need to provide high-quality patient care. ?? 2. Trauma & Safety-Net Hospitals Require Strong Strategy Grady is both a Level 1 trauma center and a safety-net hospital, meaning it must balance high-acuity emergency care with ensuring access for uninsured and underinsured populations. Haupert has successfully: ? Expanded outpatient care in underserved areas ? Implemented mobile health programs to reduce readmissions ? Maintained financial stability while prioritizing community health ?? 3. Healthcare Leadership Requires Adaptability Leading a large health system—especially one that serves diverse patient populations—requires navigating financial, political, and operational complexities. Haupert has successfully led through crisis and change, ensuring Grady continues to fulfill its mission. ?? 4. The Future is Value-Based Care As Chair of the American Hospital Association, Haupert is a strong advocate for value-based care models, focusing on long-term health outcomes rather than volume-based treatment. Future healthcare executives should be prepared to lead in an evolving healthcare landscape that prioritizes prevention and population health. ?? 5. Passion Fuels Leadership Haupert’s career began with a passion for mission-driven healthcare, shaped by his experiences at Parkland Health & Hospital System and Methodist Health System in Dallas. His leadership at Grady reflects a lifelong commitment to expanding access, improving care, and leading with purpose. ?? For Healthcare Administration Students: What leadership qualities do you think are most important for running a complex health system like Grady? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Medical Doctor (MBBS) ?? | Dual MBA/MHA Candidate at GSU ?? | VP, Future Healthcare Executives ?? | Advancing Healthcare with Data-Driven Innovation ??

HIMSS Conference 2025 – Day 2 Highlights My goal each day is simple—make one meaningful connection. Here’s a snapshot of what happened today: As much as I love the view from my hotel, I had to step outside—not to visit the Grand Canyon, but to feed my growing passion for meeting incredible people. I kicked off the day at the Emerging Leaders Connect, where I had the pleasure of chatting with Luke Noury (the life of the party, promoter, and generative AI expert) and Michelle Hileman (a speech therapist and all-around Healthcare Ops and Informaticist in the making). Their unique journeys into healthcare and HIT were truly eye-opening. Next, I attended the insightful session "Augmenting Healthcare: Empowering the Future Workforce Through Technical Education" by David Marc, PhD, CHDA, David Gibbs, & Eric Nordgren, MBA. One quote from Gibbs really stuck with me: "People can’t be who they can’t see." A powerful reminder of the importance of exposing young minds to Health IT—an industry often working behind the scenes. I finally connected with my Georgia State University Department of Health Sciences - Health Informatics crew, led by Cedric Truss, DHA, MSHI, CPHIMS, alongside Damiel Philips, Jennifer Voicu, Lais Miller, and Lettice Brown—see y’all back on campus! Had a quick but meaningful moment with my mentor, Christopher Kunney, FHIMSS, eFACHDM, MSMOT, at the Georgia Chapter Networking Event—always grateful for his guidance. And what’s a trip to Vegas without a little adventure? Wrapped up the night with Jakeah Phifer, MSHI, CAHIMS, JaMor Hairston, Llew Brown, and Michelle Zancan, who insisted that we must experience Fremont Street. Let's just say...Vegas did not disappoint. I saw topless nuns, dancing gorillas, zip lines stretching the entire street, and even a live human statue—"Tip the Sheriff"—who only moves when he gets tipped. I likely will never go back but appreciative of the experience All in all, another unforgettable day at HIMSS 2025! #HIMSS25 #HealthIT #Networking #Leadership #HealthcareInnovation
