FMD in Hungary Following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease reported in Germany at the beginning of the year, a new outbreak of this disease has just been reported by the Hungarian authorities. It concerns a dairy farm with 1400 cows in the village of KISBAJCS (near the town of GYOR see the map below) in the north of Hungary, 2.5 km from the Slovakian border to the north (Danube river) and 43 km from the Austrian border to the west. Dr Pásztor Szabolcs, CVO of Hungary, has indicated that?the measures provided for by European regulations have been immediately implemented and epidemiological investigations are under way. The greatest vigilance is required throughout the Union because this new case is evidence of a real threat to all European livestock. #FMD #AnimalHealth

First meeting of the Sustainable Livestock Intergroup The meeting organised by the Sustainable Livestock Intergroup of MEPs, which was held on Wednesday 5 March, was a great success. The testimonies and studies presented, as well as the interventions of the Commission and the rapporteurs on the proposal for a new regulation on animal welfare in transport, were very relevant. The high level of participation attests to the interest of this intergroup. Indeed, in the context of preparing the new CAP and developing a vision for the future of European livestock farming, it is essential to have a space for constructive dialogue with stakeholders within Parliament. Thanks to the organisers.
Yesterday more than 400 participants joined us either in the European Parliament or online for our first meeting as we discussed animal transport, followed by the live experience visiting an animal transport truck ?? ?? ?? ?? Huge thanks to our invited guests, both farmer and transporters, for sharing their stories of how they take care of the animals during their daily work. And many thanks also to IFIP - Institut du porc, INRAE, and SEPAB for sharing your studies with us. ?? Also appreciated was the updates from MEP Daniel Buda, MEP Tilly Metz, and Bernard van Goethem (DG SANTE) for the updates on the #AnimalWelfare during Transport proposal. The full video and more info to come on our website next week!: https://lnkd.in/gJQuhbnS

?? ?????? ???????????????? ?????????????????????????? ???????? ?????????????????? ?????????????????????????? (??????) ?? FESASS at Salon International de l'Agriculture (Paris) As every year, FESASS was present on 27 and 28 February at the Salon de l'Agriculture in Paris. didier delmotte had the opportunity to meet Commissioner Christophe Hansen, responsible for Agriculture and Food. They discussed the importance of animal health to the farming economy, as well as the problem posed by the sharp fall in the number of farmers. It was also an opportunity to meet Christophe Moulin, President of GDS France (the French organisation member of FESASS) and the other responsibles of this federation, which is very involved at European level. Finally, didier delmotte was delighted to meet up with Belgian MEP Benoit Cassart?t Cassart, who is always keen to promote livestock farming in Europe and to listen to the health concerns of farmers. #SIA #Salondelagriculture #santéanimale #animalhealth

Surveillance is crucial and the National competent authorities in EU and the Commission are mobilised. They have intensified their surveillance in relation to this risk. It is also necessary to continue to inform and raise awareness among farmers and other stakeholders.?
More bad news on the H5N1 situation in the US and news that we at WHO Regional Office for Europe and member states should all take heed of. Two key points: 1) Based on sequences, this is the second spillover of H5N1 genotype D1.1 into the US dairy herd. That means that highly pathogenic influenza H5N1 has now jumped from birds to cows three times in less than a year. 2) Both these D1.1 spillover infections, one in Nevada and one in Arizona, were detected in milk testing. The herds were asymptomatic when the milk was tested. We need to test milk in Europe in a systematic way. Reminds me of a quote of the evil Goldfinger when he meets James Bond (who is surveilling him) for the third time: "We meet again Mr Bond. Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times... is enemy action"

Commission presents its roadmap for a thriving EU farming and agri-food sector FESASS welcomes the Commission's Vision for Agriculture and Food by 2040. The issues at stake are important and it is crucial to set clear and concrete orientations to enable the sector to successfully meet the challenges. In this context, we support the project of a long-term vision for the livestock sector. As a farmers' technical organisation, we are at the disposal of the Commission services to contribute to the development of this vision in the more specific area of animal health and welfare. We also support the Commission's willingness to ensure compliance with EU standards for imports from third countries.
