?? How femtech innovators can help the NHS address the gender health gap As women increasingly turn to technology to plug the gender health gap, NHS leaders have highlighted the importance of “keeping pace” with innovation in the femtech sector. Earlier this month, the Women and Equalities Select Committee continued an ongoing inquiry into women’s reproductive health conditions, in which Samantha Niblett MP, Labour MP for South Derbyshire and founder of Labour: Women in Tech, led a discussion on how the NHS can leverage femtech to improve treatment and care. ?? Dr Sue Mann, NHS England’s first national clinical director for women’s health, told the committee: “There is an explosion of femtech apps and I think that it's our job to help people navigate through them." The UK’s Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) Healthcare has received 200 applications to its recent funding call, Competition 25, offering selected femtech companies the opportunity to develop and roll out new technologies within the NHS. But the NHS must strike the right balance between supporting innovation, whilst maintaining objectivity and avoiding conflicts of interest. ?? Dame Lesley Regan, women’s health ambassador for England and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Imperial College suggested that the NHS needs a system in place to “sort through” femtech companies and only commission those which are “altruistic” and “actually want to improve lives”. Starting in January 2025, I'll be producing a series of 30-40 minute video Q&A sessions with experts across women's health, innovation, technology, entrepreneurship and other fields. These events will be held live and promoted via our growing women's health membership network (Femalytics) as well as (Women of Wearables (wearables, health tech & femtech), Femtech World), where appropriate. The focus on these sessions will be sharing lessons learned, pearls of wisdom and other knowledge about a wide range of subjects, such as product development and commercialization, entrepreneurship, fundraising, building companies, overcoming bias, career development and much more. The aim is to, with these sessions, create a body of wisdom, insights and perspectives from women (and men) working hard (and driving change) in women's health and wellbeing globally. I have a few asks: 1. If you're interested in participating in one of these Q&A sessions, please respond to this message. 2. If you know of people that I should reach out to to participate in a session, please tag them and their company 3. Please share this request with your network so that others can provide recommendations. Also, I'm tagged a few people from my network with the aim of spreading this message more widely. Friends: Thanks in advance for helping me to identify people to highlight in this series. ?? Expectant mothers who maintain a diet that meets USDA dietary guidelines during pregnancy may be more likely to have infants with healthy birthweights, steadier growth patterns, and potentially a reduced risk of obesity later in childhood, according to a new study. The?research, involving more than 2,800 mother-child pairs across eight ECHO Cohort Study Sites, suggests that following a healthy prenatal diet in line with the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans could have long-term positive effects on infant growth up to 24 months. ?? Monique Hedderson of Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research, commented: "The findings support a role for a balanced prenatal diet that aligns with the USDA Dietary Guidelines in promoting healthy birthweights and balanced growth through early childhood. “This suggests the need for programmes to help improve pregnant people’s access to healthy food and interventions to support healthy eating during pregnancy.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eySzdzys #maternalhealth #newbornhealth #womenshealth #femtech #diet #nutrition #healthcare #obesity #food #pregnancy #research
