For the first time in 20 years, the pay gap between men and women has actually grown. The average woman working full time made 83% of what a full-time working man-made—down from 84% in 2022. Across races, those stats look different still: In 2023, Latinas were paid 51 cents for every $1 White, non-Latino men earned; Black women were paid 64 cents, compared with 66 cents; Asian women were paid 83 cents, compared with 86 cents; and White women were paid 73 cents, compared with 74 cents. To add some context, this has historically been a slow-moving battle. The average woman was earning just 74% of what a man earned in 2000. This updated stat shows that the work women do is widely undervalued, and we must continue to advocate for what we deserve. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gp6zTpNk

Lael Wilcox broke a world record, cycling the globe in 108 days, 12 hours, and 12 minutes, starting and ending in Chicago. The 38-year-old rode east to New York, flew to Portugal and crossed Europe to Georgia, traversed Australia and New Zealand, and finished with a haul from Anchorage, Alaska, back to Chicago on Wednesday. “It was probably the most fun ride of my life,” she said. “She just has such incredible physical stamina, mental toughness, and just sheer determination to go out and do these extreme efforts,” said Anne-Marije Rook, editor at Cycling Weekly magazine. More paid leave is good for a mom’s well-being. ?? We certainly didn’t need a study to tell us this, but nevertheless, one conducted in Hong Kong showed that moms who received an additional four weeks reported a 22% drop in postpartum depression cases. Four weeks. Just one month extra. Blink and you’ll miss it—yet it showed significant change in new moms’ mental health. It just goes to show that even small adjustments in policies can set everyone up for success in big ways—moms, babies, and entire families. The U.S., which still has no national paid leave policy, can stand to learn from this.
