The Federal Electronic Health Record Modernization (FEHRM) office is driving federal health information technology (IT) solutions to lead the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Coast Guard and other partners in implementing a single, common federal electronic health record (EHR). Our goal is to provide health IT that providers and patients don’t need to think about in order to create a seamless care experience.
An EHR is software used to securely document, store, retrieve, share, and analyze information about individual patient care. It enables a digital version of a patient's health record. Our single, common federal EHR enables comprehensive patient data to be readily available wherever care is provided to better inform care; minimizes the number of times patients need to share their health histories, undergo duplicative tests, or manage printed health records; creates seamless integration of health care data; and helps ensure more efficient, safer care, and a better patient experience.
Chartered in December 2019, we serve as an organizational structure that enables decision-making in the federal space and drives federal solutions for optimizing EHR implementation and operation. We are achieving this mission by actively managing risks and the operation of the joint Federal Data Center, where all federal health data resides; minimizing risk to EHR deployment and implementation; identifying opportunities for efficiency, standardization, and system and process optimization, advancing interoperability across the federal and private sectors.

It's been one year since we launched the #FederalEHR at Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC). Congrats to FHCC for this achievement! The site continues to be a model for federal health care and share what they've learned as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs resumes deployments. Stay tuned as we highlight Lovell FHCC more this month in celebration.
On March 9, 2024, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, United States Department of Defense, and Federal Electronic Health Record Modernization Office launched the #FederalEHR at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC). This is the first joint deployment of the Federal EHR, which DOD calls MHS GENESIS, at a joint VA and DOD facility. Lovell FHCC is the only fully integrated, jointly run VA and DOD health care system in the country and provides health care to approximately 75,000 patients each year, including Veterans, Service members and their families, and Navy recruits. The joint deployment ensures that all patients who visit the facility will receive care that is coordinated through a single fully integrated EHR system. The Federal EHR also improves the ability for VA and DOD to coordinate care and share data with each other and the rest of the U.S. health care system. #FEHRLovellFHCC

At the Health Level Seven International (HL7?) Government Birds of a Feather virtual meeting, #FEHRM and other federal leaders came together to discuss standards, exchange ideas on interoperability, and enhance collaboration across government departments and agencies. During the meeting, FEHRM Interoperability Director John Short, MBA, MS, and CPHIMS shared the impressive growth of provider participation in the joint health information exchange.
