I’ve been thinking a lot over the last few days about the cyclone approaching SEQ and the risks that follow. Having lived through a cyclone myself, I know the stress and uncertainty in the lead-up. There’s so much information out there about preparing for the storm, but what about the risks that emerge after the cyclone has passed? The tragic passing of a young man has always stuck with me. It wasn’t the storm itself that claimed his life—it was the days that followed. He died from carbon monoxide poisoning while running a generator in his garage. This is a danger often overlooked when people are trying to get back to normal. It’s a reminder that the aftermath can be just as dangerous as the storm itself, and that’s something I’m especially aware of working in WHS. How about we take a moment to consider the dangers that might be overlooked in the aftermath? In the chaos and uncertainty, it’s easy for the immediate risks to overshadow some of the more subtle hazards. ??? Cyclone Aftermath: Hidden Dangers You May Overlook ??? While we’re all aware of downed power lines, floodwaters, and structural damage, here are a few things we might not think about, but should: ?? Mental Fatigue – The stress of preparing, dealing with damage, and the uncertainty of what's ahead can impair our judgment, making safety risks harder to spot. ?? Generator Use & Carbon Monoxide Poisoning – Running generators indoors or in confined spaces can be fatal. Always ensure proper ventilation when using these. ?? Drowning Risks During Cleanup – Hidden debris, submerged objects, or strong currents in pools and floodwaters can pose drowning hazards. Stay cautious around water while cleaning. ?? Changed Road Conditions – Roads can change drastically after a cyclone. New potholes, washouts, and debris make familiar routes dangerous. Drive carefully. ?? Unfamiliar Equipment Use – Recovery often requires equipment like chainsaws and power tools, which may be unfamiliar or rarely used. Accidents can happen if these are handled improperly. ?? Animal Hazards – Displaced wildlife, including snakes and spiders, may seek shelter in homes or worksites. Be cautious of hidden critters. This is not an everyday event, and many will be making quick decisions in unfamiliar situations. Let's think about our own safety, check in on our neighbours, and make sure we’re keeping an eye on the people who are doing out-of-the-ordinary recovery work.
