As we head into the holiday season, what's more important than making sure children in our communities have access to the nutritious food they need to grow and thrive? Our School Pantry Program expansion continued last week with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Millennial Tech Middle School school pantry. This San Diego Unified Community School is located in Southeast San Diego. The new school pantry will serve 300 households every month at bi-weekly distributions held directly on campus for students and their families. The school had been on the waiting list for over a year, and it was a happy day to be able to provide much needed resources. This holiday season, Feeding San Diego and some of our agency partners are hosting additional food distributions. The food varies by distribution, but may include holiday food items like chicken broth, canned corn, stuffing mix, mashed potatoes, cornbread muffin mix, sweet potatoes, and even turkey! We are honored to help provide food for holiday tables around San Diego County. These are the holiday distributions in November. It's #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth, and we wanted to hear from a community member on why having the Mobile Pantry Program reach communities on reservations and in food deserts, like Descanso, is so vital. "I’m a Kumeyaay. We’re four in the family and sometimes, my mom comes to visit. I’ve been coming here for maybe a year and a half. I used to do Native American monitoring for 13 years. I don’t have a job right now, so that’s why we come. It’s a lot of help. Right now, I’m not driving. My son is driving for me. As soon as I start driving, I’m going to find a job. We really love whatever they give us. I really love the vegetables. We're very happy to have the vegetables, all the lentils, carrots, celery, it’s very healthy for us. Food is so expensive right now. So this helps a lot. I went to Walmart, and I just bought one onion, and then I came here, and I got a whole bunch of onions. I love everything we get. We don’t throw anything away. There are a lot of families on the reservation. If we have anything left, we give the food to them. I just want to say thank you very much for all the volunteers. Thank you for all the people that have been helping and keep going. Feeding San Diego is very helpful for so many families that really need the food. Come join Feeding San Diego at the Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore for a panel discussion, Q&A, and book signing! You will hear from panelists Dr. Janina Scarlet, Jennifer Harris Edstrom (she/her), and Dana Williams and will learn about the history of the Hunger Action Heroes as well as the complimentary curriculum guide for teachers and parents to help teach the four main themes of the book, including the impact of hunger on health, the impact of food waste on the environment, empathy, and empowerment.
