Feeding San Diego’s School Pantry Program is a longstanding program that addresses childhood hunger and food insecurity in partnership with elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the county. Typically held twice a month and run by school staff or parents, school pantries use spaces on campus, such as auditoriums or parking lots, to distribute nutritious food to parents and members of the community. There are over 20 schools throughout San Diego County who are on a waitlist to be a part of the program. Our goal is to get all these schools off the waitlist this year, but we need the community's help to continue to expand the program. Gifts of every size make a difference, as do monthly donors. Today is Hunger Action Day. Why do we need to take action now? Because the number of people living in food insecure households in the US?is at the highest rate and number of individuals and children since 2014. Just last week, the USDA released data showing that food insecurity in the United States increased by 6% in 2023.?47 million people, including nearly 14 million children, are living in food insecure households. It doesn't have to be this way. If we unite behind policies that support families and federal nutrition programs, and support the work that hunger-relief organizations do to break cycles that perpetuate hunger, we can move in the right direction. Congratulations to the team at Cooley LLP for coming out on top in our annual Food From the Bar fundraising challenge! Their team raised more than $15,000 to support local families in bringing nutritious meals home. They also contributed over 130 volunteer hours. The Cooley LLP team raised the most funds out of 19 other groups that participated. Thanks to the collective support from our Food From the Bar participants, funds were raised to provide 124,000 meals to San Diegans experiencing food insecurity. We are so grateful to the local legal community for getting behind our mission and supporting the community. We're "Uniting to Combat Hunger" with Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW and Humana for a food drive to support our veterans. Now through November 11, you can drop off food donations to participating VFW posts and the VFW Foundation with Humana will donate $1 for every pound, up to $1,500 per post (a minimum of 500 pounds of food need to be collected by the post in order to qualify).
