November marks the beginning of #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth—a time to honor the strength, culture, and resilience of Native communities. At Feeding Louisiana, we recognize the tremendous efforts of Native and tribal leaders who work tirelessly to ensure their communities have access to nutritious food and vital resources. According to USDA data, Native Americans are three (3) times more likely to be food insecure than white individuals, with other disparities that far exceed national averages. This month, our executive team attended Feeding America's Fall Forum where a NEW network strategic framework was announced after a year of input from food banks, state associations, regional cooperations, food pantries, meal programs, and neighbors facing hunger. The Vision: The Feeding America network will collaborate like never before with neighbors facing hunger and other partners to tackle ending hunger from all angles so everyone can thrive. Food insecurity affects about 47.4 million people in the United States 5. Food insecurity affects nearly one quarter of U.S. children 6. 841,000 U.S. children experienced very low food security 7. Food insecurity affects non-white households disproportionately 8. Southern states experience food insecurity at a higher rate than the rest of the country 9. Rural parishes have higher rates of food insecurity than urban parishes 10. Food insecurity is associated with increased risk of multiple chronic health conditions. Feeding Louisiana is now leading the way as the new manager of the Louisiana Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Health! ?? In one of the first months of managing this vital program, we were able to serve 30,921 seniors with CSFP boxes delivered, and this is just the beginning! ?? Through this program, we're committed to providing eligible senior residents with nutritious USDA-donated foods, ensuring access to healthy meals for those who need it most.
