Since the implementation of The Local Food Purchasing Agreement in 2022, the five Feeding Colorado food banks utilized over $4 million of LFPA funding to partner with over 70 Colorado producers and food hubs to distribute almost 2 million pounds of Colorado food products to Coloradans experiencing food insecurity. Not only did the Feeding Colorado food banks distribute these products to neighbors through our direct service programs, but the food banks also provided LFPA products to over 600 partner agencies, thus expanding the reach of the program and allowing smaller nonprofits to access high-quality Colorado products in rural and remote areas of the state. At a time of significantly increased need for food bank services coupled with limited resources for the charitable food network and local producers, we are concerned and disheartened about the elimination of this program. An important source of support for our Colorado producers is gone, and a point of access to fresh, local foods for neighbors will no longer be available. This program provided a solution to one of the biggest challenges for small and midsize farms -- market access. We will continue to work with our local agriculture producers as much as possible and advocate for the continuation of programs at the state and federal levels that provide economic opportunities for them. We are hopeful that the USDA and the new Secretary of Agriculture will prioritize the needs of small and mid-size farmers in future programs, and we look forward to working alongside our state and regional offices to develop such initiatives.

Project Angel Heart and Feeding Colorado are excited to announce the creation of Food is Medicine Colorado (FIMCO), a statewide multi-stakeholder coalition aimed at enhancing the role of nutrition in health care and increasing access to medically tailored food and nutrition services for people living with (or at increased risk for) severe, complex, and/or chronic illnesses. We’re thrilled to welcome Kaiser Permanente as an inaugural member of FIMCO. Kaiser Permanente is a national leader in supporting food as medicine initiatives, making it one of their top priorities. We look forward to the valuable health care expertise they will bring to the coalition and eagerly anticipate the collaboration they can help foster with health care organizations across Colorado.
