Last Friday, I had the honor of attending?Feeding Southwest Virginia's Elected Officials Day. I am incredibly appreciative to have had the opportunity to celebrate and volunteer for an organization that does so much to battle food insecurity in this region of the Commonwealth. Please consider donating and/or volunteering if you are able: https://lnkd.in/ekNUy34g https://lnkd.in/eJjFB3UZ
关于我们
Our mission is to feed Southwest Virginia's hungry through a network of partners and engage our region in the fight to end hunger. The food bank serves 26 counties and 9 cities across a region where 1 in 8 people and 1 in 5 kids face hunger. We host engaging and meaningful corporate volunteer experiences at all three locations, including the Salem Distribution Center, the Abingdon Distribution Center, and the Community Solutions Center in Roanoke's Melrose neighborhood.

??It was my absolute honor to attend today’s ribbon-cutting at Feeding Southwest Virginia. We celebrated the amazing work they do and their beautiful renovation at their site on Electric Rd. This incredible organization, in our backyard, serves counties all across our region. It’s daunting to know that one in every five children in Virginia are food insecure.?? It’s uplifting to know that Feeding Southwest Virginia is working so hard to eradicate this problem. Thank you to the Feeding Southwest Virginia team, the countless volunteers, and donors, for the life-changing work that you do.?? #EndHunger

Beyond the honor of serving the public, one of the great privileges that I have as Commissioner of the Revenue is to be able to support our community through events that are organized by fellow Commissioners' offices across the Commonwealth. One of these events is the now-6th annual Commissioners and Cans Food Drive that kicked off yesterday and runs until the end of August. We will be collecting non-perishable canned food items to help our local food banks combat food insecurity and I am proud that our team will work with the people at Feeding Southwest Virginia to help address this problem in the Star City and in Southwest Virginia more generally. We will be collecting non-perishable food items at the Commissioner of the Revenue's office in the Noel C Taylor Municipal Building here in downtown Roanoke - 215 Church Ave SW, Rooms 213 and 251 - until August 31. Last year, we collected 360 pounds to donate to Feeding Southwest Virginia. This year, we're hoping to tip the scales with at least 500 pounds in donations. Do you know what made last year happen and what can make this year happen? The power of community and the willingness for all of us to offer a hand up. It is my hope that we flex our power and offer our hands out to lift up.
