FedGeoDay 2025 is rapidly approaching. The event is scheduled to take place at the American Red Cross Building in Washington, D.C. from April 22-23. The event showcases the capabilities of open geospatial ecosystems to support Federal use cases. Geospatial professionals will learn how open tools and data can enhance government operations and readiness. One of this year’s featured events will be a demonstration of open-source geospatial applications for resilience, moderated by GeoSolutions’ Director of Sales and Business Development Ryan Burley. It will feature presentations from the City of Chattanooga’s Director of Performance Management and Open Data Daniel J. Dufour, USGS National Geospatial Program team member Xan Fredericks, Sea Island Software’s (HURREVAC) President and CEO Karen Townsend, Development Seed Cloud Engineer Henry Rodman, and Oak Ridge National Lab’s UAS Group Lead Andrew Duncan. Tickets to the event are available now! Head to the FedGeoDay website to purchase yours! #FedGeoDay2025 #OpenSourceGeospatial #GeospatialSolutions https://www.fedgeo.us/

Sometimes, great things emerge from small email chains. That's the gist of the origin story behind the Python astronomy package known as Astropy, according to NASA open-science aficionado Steve Crawford, who gave the opening keynote at the first-ever GW Open Source Conference (OSCon). His story shows how the simple act of getting people talking to one another — essential to making open source work — can set off a series of events that change science (and the world): https://lnkd.in/ehz2Mnvp Steve also explained how #opendata, #openscience and open #geospatial ecosystems are changing the world when it comes to helping us understand our planet. One example he highlighted: Prithvi, an open-source "foundation model" developed by IBM and NASA, which uses machine learning to analyze satellite imagery for tasks like flood mapping, burn-scar identification, crop-yield estimation and land-use monitoring: https://lnkd.in/e6K39MHv Prithvi's capabilities fit neatly into FedGeoDay 2025's theme: "Open Resilience: Using Open Geospatial Ecosystems to Predict, Prepare, and Respond." Taking place April 22-23 in Washington, DC, this year's FedGeoDay conference will devote significant time to the growing role of geospatial ML and AI, from disaster preparedness to agriculture. If you're intrigued, visit our website to learn how to register and get involved: https://fedgeo.us. In addition to telling folks about FedGeoDay, I also appreciated getting to learn about what other open-source practitioners and enthusiasts in the region are working on. In the coming days, I'll share a bit about what they're working on and their lessons on open source, open data and open science. My thanks to the GW Open Source Program Office for organizing OSCon. Stay tuned! Eddie Pickle Bill Dollins
