Big win for college students in Virginia! ?????? Virginia’s food banks are proud to celebrate the creation of the Hunger-Free Campus Grant Program—a major investment in student success and a future where no learner goes hungry. Thanks to strong bipartisan and community support, this new program will provide critical funding to food pantries and wraparound support services at eligible campuses across the Commonwealth. With this legislation, Virginia joins a growing number of states taking action to ensure students don’t have to choose between paying tuition and affording their next meal. Proposed cuts to SNAP and Medicaid will dramatically increase the number of people facing hunger, which food banks alone cannot offset. Medicaid covers nearly 1.9 million people in Virginia, more than 15% of the people in the state. “It’s going to be hard for us to replace that,” says Eddie Oliver, our Executive Director, referring to seven cancelled USDA food shipments (so far). “Collectively, Virginia food banks are spending five times more money on food than we did in 2019 — both because of higher food prices and greater demand at our pantries.” The missing food isn’t just a lifeline for families — it’s grown by American farmers. These shipments of fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy support both community health and the U.S. agricultural economy, which includes over 40,000 farms right here in Virginia.
