Minnesota Department of Revenue Commissioner Paul Marquart put it well during this recent FTA Leaderboard interview when he said that the experience a person has with their tax agency can very much impact how they feel about government and ultimately their confidence in democracy. Tax administrators are the standard-bearers when it comes to the practices of transparency, security, and customer service. Veterans Day was first known as Armistice Day, a day originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I. The word "Armistice" was replaced with "Veterans" in 1938 and with that the purpose of the day changed to honoring all veterans who served honorably in the military. Over the years, Veterans Day has evolved into a day not just for honoring those who served in wartime but for recognizing all veterans, including those who served in peacetime. Today it serves as a time to reflect on veterans' contributions and ongoing challenges, such as health care and employment. It is a day for honoring veterans' service while advocating for their needs. ????On this Veterans Day let us all take time to reach out to those who served and those facing hardship or other challenges as they all deserve our respect, thanks, and most importantly our kindness. Our 2024 WSATA Conference wrapped up yesterday in Palm Springs, California, and what an incredible gathering. The morning general sessions got everyone off on the right foot with fun and informative reports from leadership sharing happenings within their organizations. The final two days included reports from State of Alaska Department of Revenue Deputy Director Brandon Spanos, Colorado Department of Revenue Executive Director Heidi Humphreys, Hawai?i Department of Taxation - Ka ?Oihana ?Auhau Director Gary S. Suganuma, Idaho State Tax Commission Chairman Jeff McCray, Taxation and Revenue New Mexico Chief Legal Counsel Dee Wald, Arizona Department of Revenue Director Robert Woods, Montana Department of Revenue Director Brendan Beatty, Nevada Department of Taxation Executive Director Shellie Hughes, and Utah State Tax Commission Deputy Executive Director Deanna Hearing.? The conference was among the biggest for WSATA with over 270 attendees taking advantage of the conference’s more than 40 learning sessions and networking events. The 2024 WSATA Annual Conference is off to a wonderful start! California Department of Tax and Fee Administration Director Nicolas Maduros this morning welcomed a packed audience to picturesque Palm Springs. Joining Director Maduros onstage for the Day 1 commissioner reports were California Employment Development Department Tax Processing and Accounting Division Chief Jarrod Shepler, Oregon Department of Revenue Commissioner Betsy Imholt, and Washington State Department of Revenue Deputy Director John Ryser. Deputy Director Ryser put it well when he encouraged all attendees to take advantage of the incredible wealth of knowledge available in this great gathering of tax administration professionals. #wsata2024 #learning #networking #knowledge #taxadmin?

It’s an exciting time of year as we approach the FTA Western States Association of Tax Administrators Conference, and with this year's event happening in California we thought it only appropriate to share this post from one of our host state members. WSATA and FTA are all about coming together as tax administrators, and as California Department of Tax and Fee Administration Director Nicolas Maduros puts it so well in this video, to: "share best practices, learn from one another - both from our successes and our mistakes - is something really valuable."
