What does it take to be financially secure? That's what National True Cost of Living Coalition, co-founded by FPWA and Community Service Society of New York, asked the Urban Institute. The Urban Institute answered with a new measure that provides key data that going forward, can and should inform policymaking on issues of financial security, opportunity and dignity for all. ICYMI: The Urban Institute released a cutting-edge report on the true cost of economic security in America earlier this week. The report introduces a new measure called the True Cost of Economic Security, which now gives us a way to evaluate economic security for American families. Because it does more than look at basic needs, this new measure will help shift the national conversation to what Americans need to thrive, not just survive. Among the report's findings: ?? Half of all people fall below the TCES line. While many are able to pay their bills, most are unable to save for the future. ?? Low resources rather than high costs characterize places with the highest TCES rates. ?? An individual’s likelihood of falling below the TCES line varies little if they live in a bigger city or a smaller community. ?? Three out of five children live in families with resources below the TCES line. ?? The vast majority of people in single-parent families fall below the TCES level. Yesterday, FPWA was in Albany to raise our voice in support of policies that assist NY families and reduce child poverty. Our very own, Director of Policy, Advocacy, and Research, Joseph Jones, spoke in support of giving families what they need to afford to live - and thrive - here in New York, such as income supports for NY families, including refundable tax credits and stronger public benefits; housing vouchers; and food benefits. Catch his full remarks here: bit.ly/4fW44vx and check out NY1's coverage of the rally here: bit.ly/3Zf0yH2 You can also check out FPWA's report, "Rewriting the Story: Lived experiences of New Yorkers receiving cash assistance," which confronts the harsh realities of New Yorkers who face serious barriers to #economicmobility, and offers a variety of policy changes and people-centered, trauma-informed recommendations that can be implemented statewide. We also recommend bold structural changes to the system that get to the root of economic insecurity. Find out more and read it here: bit.ly/4dVCNIj

Americans deserve to be able to plan for, save for, and invest in their futures. The Urban Institute’s new report unveils a #TrueCostOfEconomicSecurityMeasure that will help policymakers appreciate the often-unseen challenges faced by every day American families. Read more, via the National True Cost of Living Coalition: https://lnkd.in/e3epxGau

Earlier this year, the National True Cost of Living Coalition conducted a survey in which 65 percent of Americans earning more than 200 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL) indicated they were struggling financially. It showed that two things can be true: Americans can make ends meet, but they are also unable to get ahead and plan for the future.?? ? Because traditional measures like the Official Poverty Measure (OPM) and the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) focus only on acute deprivation, the struggles of many Americans are often unseen by experts and policymakers. This is perhaps most evident in this month’s election results, with most traditional economic metrics pointing to a booming economy. Yet, voters voiced widespread dissatisfaction with their own financial situations and with the broader economy.?? ? We need a clearer picture of how Americans are truly faring. That’s why our Coalition commissioned the Urban Institute to conduct a comprehensive study of what it truly costs to live with financial security in the United States in the twenty-first century. Today, we are thrilled to announce that Urban Institute has completed that report, with a holistic measure that comprehensively accounts for the costs modern American families face alongside the resources available to them.? ? This new #TrueCostOfEconomicSecurity (TCES) measure will help drive meaningful conversations about what it means to #ThriveNotJustSurvive in today’s economy. It is our hope that this new measure can be a tool for policymakers to craft fact-driven solutions that help American families achieve lasting economic security.? ?
