The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) works to provide science-based analysis of and solutions to protect against catastrophic threats to national and international security. Specifically, FAS works to reduce the spread and number of nuclear weapons, prevent nuclear and radiological terrorism, promote high standards for nuclear energy’s safety and security, illuminate government secrecy practices, as well as track and eliminate the global illicit trade of conventional, nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. FAS was founded in 1945 by many of the Manhattan Project scientists who wanted to prevent nuclear war and is one of the longest serving organizations in the world dedicated to reducing nuclear threats and informing the public debate by providing technically-based research and analysis on these issues.

To help address these issues, the Federation of American Scientists hosted an AI Legislation Policy Sprint to crowdsource, develop, and publish a set of creative AI-focused ideas that could aid government agencies in regulating the use and development of AI technology. The final slate of 15 policy memos were authored by AI experts who applied their experience in critical sectors such as healthcare, R&D, and education to propose targeted legislative policy solutions, with the theme of AI in education making up the largest share of ideas. Even if members of the public don’t know about ad comms, they depend on these expert recommendations, which heavily influence the FDA’s final decision to approve or reject a new treatment. However, in recent years, the public has increasingly begun to think that some approval decisions are made hastily without considering the evidence and the people who will be impacted. A 2021 poll conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that only 37% of Americans say they trust the FDA’s decisions.
