FBR’s Top Cited Articles in 2023 – Article #4 Each year, certain articles make an outsized impact, helping to shape the conversation in family business research. Based on Sage Publishers' 2023 report, we’re highlighting the top five most-cited articles published in 2021 and 2022. Generations in Family Business: A Multifield Review and Future Research Agenda Vittoria Magrelli, Paola Rovelli, PhD, Carlotta Benedetti, Dr. Ruth überbacher, and Alfredo De Massis Abstract: The concept of generations has become increasingly important in the social science fields to explain diverse phenomena affecting organizations. This is especially true in the family business field where generations are considered a constitutive element. Nevertheless, there is still a limited understanding of generations and the implications of their involvement in family business. We review prior studies on generations by considering different social science fields, which we analyze according to a novel theoretical framework. Building on this framework, and placing particular emphasis on family firms, we identify important knowledge gaps that serve as a springboard for future research.

Based on Sage Publishers' 2023 report, we’re highlighting the top five most-cited articles published in 2021 and 2022. The Psychological Foundations of Management in Family Firms: Emotions, Memories, and Experiences Ronald H Humphrey/FS/VCU, Alfredo De Massis, Pasquale Massimo Picone, Yi Tang, and Ron Piccolo Abstract: Exploring the psychological foundations of management in family firms is necessary to understand why they formulate and implement strategies differently from nonfamily firms, and why and how family firm behavior varies across different family firms. Picone et al. (2021. The psychological foundations of management in family firms: Values, biases, and heuristics.?Family Business Review,?34(1), 12-32) have proposed a conceptual framework for the psychological foundations of management in family business, examining how the values, biases, and heuristics of family firm members affect strategic decision-making and family firm outcomes. Drawing on this framework, we examine emotions, memories, and experiences in family firms, disentangling “what we know” from “what we should know”, and offering some relevant questions to advance the field.

In family businesses, why do many parents insist on creating jobs for their incompetent children? How does this affect the firm and their other employees? Also, why are family businesses so easily able to rationalize bad behaviors, like tax evasion and bribery, for the 'sake of the family'? This FamilyBusiness.Org research translation of a Family Business Review article explores these sensitive topics. Dysfunctional behavior in family firms may initially seem to bring benefits, but it ultimately leads to bad outcomes for the family, the family business, and society. Within the family, it can result in a sense of entitlement among family members, tarnished reputations, and shame for past transgressions . Within the firm, the repercussions could be decreased performance, higher employee turnover, legal issues, financial penalties, and even legal consequences for the leaders. Societal impacts include social and environmental harm, unfair competition, and increased business challenges. Thus, while anticipated benefits from dysfunctional behaviors may motivate families and their firms to behave badly, the “benefits” tend to come with severe costs. Thank you to my co-authors for sharing their work! Roland Kidwell, Linda Kidwell, John Cater and Ellison Howard, PhD. Based on Sage Publishers' 2023 report, we’re highlighting the top five most-cited articles published in 2021 and 2022. The Psychological Foundations of Management in Family Firms: Values, Biases, and Heuristics Pasquale Massimo Picone, Alfredo De Massis, Yi Tang, and Ron Piccolo Abstract: Considering the heterogeneity of family firm behaviors as reflecting the values, biases, and heuristics of individuals, we discuss the implications of the psychological foundations of management in family firms. We develop a conceptual framework for investigating how the values, biases, and heuristics of family and nonfamily members affect strategic decision-making and the outcomes of family firms. To advance the field, we put forward some relevant questions and offer a future research agenda at the intersection of the psychological foundations of management and family business.

Based on Sage Publishers' 2023 report, we’re highlighting the top five most-cited articles published in 2021 and 2022. Family Firm Heterogeneity: A Definition, Common Themes, Scholarly Progress, and Directions Forward Josh Daspit, James J. Chrisman, Triss Ashton, and Nick Evangelopoulos Abstract: While progress has been made in recent years to understand the differences among family firms, insights remain fragmented due, in part, to an incomplete understanding of heterogeneity and the scope of differences that exist among family firms. Given this, we offer a definition of and review the literature on family firm heterogeneity. A latent semantic analysis of 781 articles from 33 journals identified nine common themes of family firm heterogeneity. For each theme, we review scholarly progress made and highlight differences among family firms. Additionally, we offer directions for advancing the study of family firm heterogeneity.
