    Knowledge workers feel betrayed. In the past month, the tech world has been rocked by layoffs at Twitch, Amazon, Duolingo, Discord, and Google — and it’s creating a huge shift in how people feel about full-time work. This time last year, we surveyed 500 knowledge workers and found that big tech layoffs had left knowledge workers feeling betrayed. The vast majority are disillusioned with full-time employment and increasingly attracted to independent work; they’re freelancing for multiple companies. In late December, with a new wave of layoffs and the emergence of AI, we wanted to check back in with knowledge workers to see if their sentiments had changed. They had not. In a survey of 1,000 knowledge workers: ? Post-layoffs, 64% reported a loss of trust in the stability and security of full-time employment. ? 61% feel less secure about committing to one employer, highlighting a growing sense of uncertainty in the tech sector. ? 86% expressed a desire for more control and flexibility over their work schedules than what's possible in traditional full-time employment. ? 73% now view freelance work as more attractive than ever. ? 67% say that the emergence of generative AI has made freelance work more attractive, as they’re able to amplify their output and increase their earning potential. Driven by the recent spate of layoffs, the growth of AI, and the evolving job market, #TheGreatBetrayal continues to resonate, as the promise of full-time employment reliability seems to have been irrevocably altered. And, with the freelance economy already valued at $5.4 trillion, the trend towards independent work is not just a reaction to current market conditions but a fundamental rethinking of work-life balance. So, where are all these laid-off workers going? ?? More than half of laid-off workers said they won’t be looking for another full-time role in the same field any time soon; while 25% have decided to forgo full-time employment altogether by freelancing or starting their own business. As traditional employment models are forced to become less rigid, the rise of a dynamic, AI-enhanced freelance economy reflects a future where work is more personalized, adaptable, and aligned with the evolving aspirations of the modern worker.
