Researchers at Florida Atlantic University have created a novel #gene therapy to treat #Alzheimers disease, specifically targeting the root causes of neurodegeneration rather than just the symptoms. The therapy uses a special virus vector to deliver a key gene non-invasively through the eye. Key benefits of this technology include reducing harmful protein buildup, improving cell energy and lowering inflammation. It was developed by Dr. Jang-Yen Wu and Dr. Howard Prentice from the Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University. #OwlInnovation https://lnkd.in/duM5qzfS

Eye of Cerebellum by Marianne Monet, Florida Atlantic University at Jupiter Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute Doctoral student, Monet captured more than scientific data – she captured art. Using an epi-fluorescence microscope, Monet revealed the "eye" of a young mouse cerebellum, showcasing the remarkable beauty of the brain. ??? Her image earned third place in this year’s Art of Science contest, but her work goes far beyond aesthetics. Monet’s research at Florida Atlantic’s Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute explores how immune challenges during childhood can shape the brain and influence behavior later in life. This incredible blend of #science and #art reminds us: the brain is as beautiful as it is complex. The Art of Transgenesis by Addison Manofsky, Sixth Annual Art of Science Second Place winner Addison Manofsky, a pre-med student at FAU’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, captured this breathtaking image of transgenic zebrafish embryos at 72 hours post-fertilization. These glowing zebrafish, expressing fluorescent markers that highlight active genes, provide critical insights into cell types, protein expression, and biological processes—a perfect fusion of art and science. Art of Science First Place Winner: All's Fair in Love and War by Jacob Francis, Ph.D., FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Science Featuring a stunning dark-field view of the stigma of Mexican clover (Richardia grandiflora), showcasing magenta-stained pollen grains and intricate calcium oxalate crystals that possibly deter herbivores. "This is a really excellent place to study the natural world and how humans are impacting it," he said. "Florida is a unique place with endemic species that cannot exist anywhere else. There is no shortage of plants, introduced from around the world, that are changing our native ecosystems. That kind of locality, and its complex interactions with human society, are what makes the world a beautiful place to be."
