Data in Fauna is automatically replicated across at least three regions, ensuring fault tolerance and built-in failover. What do we mean by 'truly serverless'? When talking about serverless architectures, most think of ephemeral functions or edge workloads that spin up on demand. But what happens when we need to store and manage data? Unlike functions, data must persist—so how can a database be “truly serverless” if it must maintain state? Matt Henderson tackles this question and proposes a definition: A truly serverless database automates and abstracts away all deployment, infrastructure, and vendor-specific considerations—requiring no upfront or ongoing intervention.
