What will it take for the U.S. to lead the world in AI? At The Ashby Workshops, presented by Fathom, we brought together top minds from government, industry, and research to tackle this question. The discussions highlighted a strong consensus that the U.S. must lead in AI, but leadership is about more than just pushing the technological frontier, it also requires security, and alignment with shared values. Participants emphasized the need to extend beyond capabilities, data, energy, and talent. The U.S. must also lead in governance, societal adoption, and adaptation. These insights are just a small part of the conversation. Stay tuned at The Ashby Workshops and check out the rest of our takeaways here: https://lnkd.in/ecdbEWj9 #AI #USLeadership #Innovation

Tort law is where AI and policy will collide—are we ready? The landscape of American innovation is shaped by where liability lies (and where it doesn’t). AI may soon lose the liability shield that software has enjoyed for decades. Will that accelerate security, or stifle innovation? We need to get ahead of this. Read Dean Ball’s latest on why AI liability is the next policy frontier: https://lnkd.in/eb3_x4SP. #AIGovernance #TortLaw

At his Senate nomination hearing to be the next Director of the U.S. OSTP, Michael Kratsios lays out his plan for American tech policy: "The shape of future global order will be defined by whomever leads across AI, quantum, nuclear, and other critical and emerging technologies. If we are to lead the world in science and technology for the next century...the only way to do so will be to double down on what has made our history of innovation great: the uniquely American free-market approach to scientific discovery, which harnesses the combined strengths of government, industry, and academia." Don't miss Dennis Gleeson's recent thoughts on the AI landscape and reflecting on his experience at The Ashby Workshops last month. Leaders from policy, industry, and research convened to tackle some of AI’s biggest challenges: ??How do we balance AI progress with security? ????How can the U.S. outpace global competitors like China? ???What role should private AI governance play in creating standards? The consensus? America must lead, but governance must evolve alongside AI itself. Learn more about The Ashby Workshops: https://lnkd.in/euu7g6CU.
Just over a month ago, I participated in The Ashby Workshops. Now, as DeepSeek streaks across AI’s landscape and DOGE experiments with AI in a production environment, I can’t help but wonder how different those conversations would be today. Looking at the tatters of my sense of responsible AI governance, I find myself asking: How might we think about AI’s future? Governing AI globally is a maze right now. European leaders are breaking ranks, there are power vacuums everywhere, and people are looking to the Trump Administration for guidance. However, the question is not who will lead, but what new model of governance can rise to meet this challenge. As Dean Ball writes, government’s deliberatively slow pace serves an essential purpose, it must remain the final arbiter. In the context of rapidly evolving technologies such as AI, we require governance that can be nimble, scalable, and capable of fostering competition that drives innovation. Private governance models, with their ability to adapt quickly, should be at the forefront of these discussions. More on this concept here: https://lnkd.in/e3qBpc5K
