When PBS started working with Fathom they had 20,000 viewer stories, from across member stations & programs, they needed to analyze. Today, they do that with ease ?? PBS, America’s most trusted broadcaster, connects over 130 million people each year to the worlds of science, history, culture, and public affairs. It's no surprise that PBS is deeply committed to serving viewers - and has a robust viewer analytics program with plenty of information about who's watching what, where and when. But PBS lacked a way to understand how content actually impacts viewers —because that was hidden in rich open-ended viewer stories. And those were prohibitively hard to interpret with the kind of nuance, detail and accuracy necessary to analyze impact. That changed about 8 months ago, when PBS kicked off it's partnership with Fathom. There's nothing more rewarding than uncovering the illusive "why". But asking "Why?” with survey open-ends often falls short. Here's how to fix that! ? The fix? Shift from “Why” to “What”. ? This isn’t about ditching why — it’s about getting to it in a way that actually works. And it's really easy to do! ? Instead of: “Why do you like that brand?” ?? Ask: “What specifically do you like most about that brand?” ? Instead of: “Why are you unlikely to recommend us?” ?? Ask: “What do we need to change to make it more likely you'd recommend us?” ? Instead of: “Why do you feel that way?” ?? Ask: “What happened that makes you feel that?” ? Instead of: “Why do you prefer message A?” ?? Ask: “What did you like better about message A than message B?” Respondents tend to give vague, unhelpful answers to generic "why" follow ups. But not because they don’t have a rich response - because the question doesn’t set them up to for success! By switching to “What”, respondents are prompted to describe real experiences — leading to richer, more actionable insights. And with good open-ended design + quality text analytics, you can get to "the why" faster and with more confidence than ever before! ??
