New Research from #FASEBBioAdvances: How Mild Ketosis Affects Brain Cells and Memory in an Alzheimer's Disease Mouse Model ?? A new study from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and UC Davis MIND Institute, University of California Davis Medical Center and the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and Department of Molecular Biosciences, University of California, Davis explores the potential of mild episodic ketosis as a therapeutic approach for Alzheimer's disease. Researchers found that short-term, daily injections of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB)—a major ketone body—reduced brain inflammation and amyloid-β buildup in an Alzheimer's mouse model. Remarkably, this brief ketosis also improved brain function, specifically mitigating deficits in hippocampal long-term depression (LTD), linked to Alzheimer's. This study opens new avenues for Alzheimer's treatment with less restrictive alternatives to ketogenic diets, such as BHB injections or dietary ketone esters, offering easier compliance and potentially safer options. New from The #FASEBJournal: Unveiling shared diagnostic biomarkers and molecular mechanisms between T2DM and sepsis: Insights from bioinformatics to experimental assays Sepsis in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is associated with prolonged recovery and worse outcomes, making early diagnosis crucial. This new study, from the Emergency Medicine Clinical Research Center, Beijing Key Laboratory of Cardiopulmonary Cerebral Resuscitation, identifies three key genes—MMP8, CD177, and S100A12—linked to sepsis in T2DM patients. Using advanced bioinformatics and machine learning, researchers developed a predictive model based on these gene biomarkers, which could help improve early diagnosis and treatment strategies.
