Now more than ever, we have to step up for science and advocate for research! Thanks to the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) for organizing 2025 Capitol Hill Day and all the NY senator and rep offices that met with us to discuss the future of NIH/NSF funding! We visited the offices of Senator Gillibrand, Senator Goldman, Rep. Goldman (NY-10), Rep. Tom Suozzi (NY-3), Rep. Jerry Nadler (NY-12), and Rep. Joe Morelle (NY-25) and had great conversations about the future of biomedical research with the staffers. Team New York was represented by Lauren Anderson, Dr. Brendan Boyce from the University of Rochester, and yours truly. Advocating for Science on Capitol Hill ??? Today, I had the honor of representing North Carolina and advocating for critical funding for scientific research during FASEB's Capitol Hill Day. Along with my colleagues Dr. Clinton Allred from UNC Greensboro and Sarah Trostle from FASEB , we met with U.S. lawmakers to stress the importance of continued investment in NIH and NSF—agencies that support life-changing research and innovation across the country. We emphasized how research funding fuels medical breakthroughs, job creation, and economic growth, especially in North Carolina, which receives nearly $2 billion in NIH funding annually. The future of U.S. leadership in biotechnology and public health depends on maintaining and increasing this support. Advocating for science isn’t just about funding; it’s about ensuring a healthier future for everyone. Congressional offices are more eager than ever to better understand the role science plays in our society and to hear personal stories for how increased federal funding in scientific agencies will improve our progress on innovation and scientific workforce development. Yesterday, I had the great pleasure to have these discussions with congressional offices alongside Joseph Yost and to participate in a Capitol Hill Day with the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). Special thanks to the Utah offices of Rep. Moore, Sen. Curtis, and Sen. Lee for taking the time to have thoughtful discussions about the importance of robust and sustained federal funding for science - not only for our state, but also our nation! ????????
