The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology—the policy voice of biological and biomedical researchers
关于我们
Founded in 1912, the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) was originally created by three independent scientific organizations to provide a forum in which to hold educational meetings, develop publications, and disseminate biological research results. What started as a small group of dedicated scientists has grown to be the nation’s largest coalition of biomedical researchers, representing 22 scientific societies and over 110,000 researchers from around the world. FASEB is now recognized as the voice of advocacy for biological and biomedical research scientists. FASEB's Mission Advance health and welfare by promoting progress and education in biological and biomedical sciences through service to our member societies and collaborative advocacy. FASEB Quick Facts ? Website: www.faseb.org ? Celebrated 100 years of service to the life sciences community in 2012 ? 22 scientific societies / more than 110,000 researchers worldwide ? Manages many scientific meetings, conferences, and exhibits each year ? Publishes The FASEB Journal and FASEB BioAdvances ? Provides career resources through job/resume postings, networking, and educational seminars

?? Th2 Cells: Key Players in Immunity, Allergy, and Disease Treatment Type 2 helper (Th2) cells are central to immune defense, but they're also major drivers of allergic diseases. From rapid immune responses to cutting-edge monoclonal antibody therapies, their role in health and disease is profound. A 2024 Top Read Review from The FASEB Journal explores how Th2 cells: ?? Drive allergic reactions via IgE and mast cell activation ?? Protect against environmental toxins, irritants, and parasites ?? Contribute to conditions like asthma and atopic dermatitis ?? Serve as a therapeutic target for monoclonal antibody treatments As research advances, targeting Th2-driven pathways is proving to be a game-changer in immunotherapy. Could this pave the way for more precise treatments in allergy and inflammation? Top Read Research from 2024: Unraveling the ER Membrane Complex: A Critical Player in Health & Disease The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is the command center for protein folding, lipid synthesis, and cellular homeostasis. But did you know that the ER membrane complex (EMC) is key to these functions, and its disruption has been linked to cancer and neurodevelopmental disorders? This review article takes a deep dive into nearly 15 years of EMC research exploring: ?? How EMC regulates protein and lipid synthesis ?? Its role in organelle communication and ER stress ?? Emerging connections to disease mechanisms As interest in EMC grows, this review highlights its significance and opens the door for future discoveries in molecular biology and medicine. If it's Thursday, it must be time for an after-hours news drop... The tl;dr summary is that all #NIH #peerreview will be centralized through the Center for Scientific Review (CSR), with the approach being touted for its cost savings and to "improve quality, consistency, and integrity of review, and maximize competition of similar science across the agency." If you've followed me for a hot minute, you know I have mad respect for the CSR team and their management of the peer review of 78% of all grant reviews. Thus, my raised eyebrow is NOT a reflection of CSR's ability to implement high quality review processes; it is more related to whether CSR will be granted all of the tools/staff needed to take on this additional workload. The majority of grant reviews handled by individual Institutes and Centers tend to be fellowships, training programs, and programs for which the review includes additional factors for consideration - justifying the need for more tailored review. Per the news item, "NIH's proposal is now under review with implementation pending external review. This includes review by HHS and the Office of Management and Budget, providing Congress with a 15-day notification period, and issuing a Federal Register notice." You can trust that we're closely tracking this at Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) and will share information as available. #scipol #sciencepolicy #scienceadvocacy #fundscience #FASEB

?? Harnessing Mitochondria Transplantation for Heart Failure Treatment ?? Mitochondria are the powerhouse of our cells, but what happens when they fail? This 2024 Top Read article from The FASEB Journal explores an innovative therapeutic strategy: transplanting mitochondria derived from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (MSC-Mito) to protect the heart. Using a doxorubicin-induced heart failure model, researchers found that MSC-Mito transplantation: ? Restores ATP production ? Reduces excessive autophagy via the AMPKα-mTOR pathway ? Prevents cardiomyocyte apoptosis and preserves heart function This study underscores the potential of mitochondria transplantation as a novel approach to combat cardiac dysfunction and heart failure. Could this be the future of regenerative medicine? Read the full article here: https://hubs.ly/Q039Wyd00 #Cardiology #Mitochondria #HeartFailure #RegenerativeMedicine #BiomedicalResearch

In her compelling op-ed published in the Chicago Sun-Times, Dr. Carole LaBonne, president of the Society for Developmental Biology, warns that rapid innovation may not be suitable for science—where careful methodology, peer review, and sustained funding are key. If rushed, it risks breaking the very foundation of scientific progress. "By undermining the long-term investments and rigorous processes that underpin scientific progress, we risk losing the very foundation on which groundbreaking discoveries are built," LaBonne writes. Read the full letter to understand why science needs stability. ???? #SciPol #SciencePolicy #DefendResearch #funding #researchers #advocacy #biomedicalresearch #biologicalresearch
