关于我们
The Farmers Market Coalition is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to strengthening farmers markets across the United States so that they can serve as community assets while providing real income opportunities for farmers. The Farmers Market Coalition is driven by three complementary goals. We call it our triple bottom line. Farmers earn fair prices for the fruits of their labor by selling directly to consumers. Consumers gain access to fresh, nutritious, local produce. Communities regain a figurative “town square,” experiencing the many positive outcomes of foot traffic and animated public space. Throughout the USA, farmers markets are achieving these goals. Some are doing it better than others. While we too are dazzled by the bigger markets which assemble hundreds of vendors and thousands of shoppers, size is not our only measure of success. Sometimes, it is the smaller farmers market operating in a challenging neighborhood that achieves this triple bottom line. Toward that end, the priorities of FMC are: - To serve as an information center for farmers markets. - To be a voice for North American farmers market advocacy. - To foster strong state and regional farmers market associations. - To bring private and public support to the table to sustain farmers markets in the long term, for the benefit of farmers, consumers, and communities. - To promote farmers markets to the public. - To develop and provide educational programming and networking opportunities for farmers market managers and farmers market vendors. Many agencies and groups support farmers markets – cooperative extension, food security advocates, departments of agriculture, and a host of nongovernmental organizations. FMC supports these efforts in serving as a central hub from which to locate allies, identify and share best practices, and positively impact public policy pertaining to farmers markets.

The North Carolina Farmers Market Network has created a recovery resource page specifically for farmers markets affected by the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene: https://lnkd.in/efrHKR3K The page includes info for market managers, resources for farmers looking for open markets to sell perishable products, and agriculture related recovery links, including useful contacts and ways to donate. Our hearts go out to our NC farmers market and agriculture community while they face unprecedented hardship in the wake of this storm. If you're able, we encourage you to use these resources to support the recovery effort in any way you can.

“I am proud to celebrate National Farmers Market Week and to support our local farmers, who feed our families and bring us together,” said Senator Padilla. “Our farmers markets nourish our neighborhoods, strengthen our local economies, and grow the relationship between growers and consumers. We cherish these spaces as a vibrant and dependable source of nutrition and community.” FMC thanks Senator Alex Padilla, Senator Joni Ernst, Representative David Valadao, Representative Chellie Pingree and each of the 28 cosponsors for their dedication to farmers markets and for this bipartisan, bicameral recognition of the vital role they play in our nation’s food system! https://lnkd.in/epDx7MKn

In January, funding for the California Nutrition Incentive Program (CNIP) at the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) was identified as one of the budget items to be cut to help close the state’s budget shortfall. In 2023, California’s farmers markets successfully advocated for $35 million to be added to the budget which would allow CDFA to apply for USDA funding through the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP), using the CNIP funds as the required match. The January 2024 announcement meant that CDFA could not spend the CNIP funds, even though they were already approved. The loss of this funding threatened statewide programs including Market Match, the largest of those programs. Our latest blog post uses this tough battle as an advocacy case study to highlight how in the following months, California’s farmers markets rallied – sometimes literally – to save this relatively small funding stream that has had a significant impact on both farmers and consumers throughout the state. How did a group of farmers markets, mostly small-scale nonprofit organizations, win over elected officials in the largest state in the nation? FMC is excited to share that for the first time, the U.S. House of Representatives will recognize National Farmers Market Week through a bipartisan House resolution! In doing so, the House joins the Senate (after passing its first NFMW resolution last year) and U.S. Department of Agriculture in recognizing National Farmers Market Week. Such alignment among the administration and both chambers of congress is a rare breath of fresh air given the current state of American politics. While divisive partisan rhetoric may dominate the news, farmers markets remain one of the few sources of bipartisanship. This year, the Senate resolution once again passed unanimously, with bipartisan support from Senator Alex Padilla, Senator Joni Ernst and 21 additional Senate cosponsors. The House resolution received bipartisan support as well, with 8 cosponsors and more expected to join. USDA also issued its 25th annual proclamation in celebration of the event. FMC thanks USDA and each cosponsor from the House and Senate for their dedication to farmers markets! FMC remains committed to advocating for farmers markets at the national level and is honored to have played a role in coordination of both the House and Senate resolutions!
