ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON SCHOOL SYSTEM became a new Farmer Foodshare customer! We made our first delivery last month, and we are so glad to see that the students at Williams High School enjoyed the apples we sourced from Lively Orchards and Perry Lowe Orchards and Winter Berries from Lewis Farms ???? ABSS is able to provide their students with NC produce through USDA’s Local Food for Schools grant and our Early Care and Education work with NC Cooperative Extension. These programs make a huge impact in our food system, providing NC-grown produce to our communities and supporting the local farmers who grow it. Plus, every dollar earned through food hub sales at Farmer Foodshare helps us grow our hunger relief programs, ensuring everyone, regardless of income, has access to fresh, local food. Welcome, ABSS! Our Program Manager, Heather, is at North Carolina State Capitol today with Farmer Foodshare’s lobbyist, along with?Carolina Farm Stewardship Association's lobbyist, friends from?Working Landscapes, and other local food hub folks.? This team is advocating for the FarmsSHARE program, a crucial initiative that’s building a healthier food system in North Carolina. It’s a two-fold program that both supports farmers in cultivating thriving businesses and livelihoods AND contributes to the emergency food system, getting nutritious food to food insecure communities throughout NC.? In 2024 alone, Farmer Foodshare’s participation in the FarmsSHARE program:? -Packed and delivered 4,898 produce boxes? -Distributed 97,960 pounds of fresh, local produce to 6 partner agencies? -Returned approximately $155,000 in revenue to NC farmers from produce purchases through this program? -More than 400 volunteers joined this community effort on 83 different days by folding, filling, and packing produce boxes? -Generated business for 70 farmers through FarmsSHARE-funded purchases With government funding for programs like these uncertain, we are working with our community to support our local farmers and keep food access programs strong! Cheer us on today!??? #localfarms?#localfarmers#northccarolinastatecapitol?#foodaccess#foodsecurity?#farmsshare?#farmerfoodshare#carolinafarms#carolinafarmstewardshipassociation?#cfsa#workinglandscapes?#foodhubs?#foodsystem#localfoodsystem

We might see farmers of color vending at local markets or featured on a sign at the grocery store and assume our state’s producers come from diverse backgrounds and have equal access to farmland. Yet 96.2% of farmland in the US, including North Carolina, is white-owned. Black farmers own just 3% of farms in the state, about 1,500 total. Knowing US farms receive subsidies, we may infer that funding is distributed evenly, however almost 97% of the $9.2 billion provided in October 2020 through USDA’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program was apportioned to white farmers. We might know of food distributions happening in our area and conclude everybody in underserved communities is being fed. But the food insecurity rate in NC was 21% for Black residents in 2021 (about double the average total statewide). Data from subsequent years is similar, Durham County included. There’s no question that Southern food is beloved. Hoppin’ John and hush puppies, grits and collard greens, low country boil and sweet potato pie. It’s easy to savor these dishes that shape the flavors of the South and think the Black communities that introduced them are likewise celebrated, supported, and respected. But racial inequities throughout history allow disparities to persist within our food system today, impacting farmers of color across our state. Food hubs have a role in building more just systems for growing, sourcing, and supplying food, and creating pathways that provide marginalized farmers with the opportunity to thrive. Black History Month, though coming to a close, recenters the work we are committed to doing every day of the year. As we cultivate a food system that nourishes everyone – from producers to eaters – we know that happens in tandem with racial justice. We’re learning from our peers and the communities we serve what it looks like to put that into practice day-to-day. We invite you, Friends of the Foodshare, to learn with us and grow towards a better future together. Onions! The most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium, repelling pests with their strong aroma, make a great companion crop to many plants with similar growing conditions. As with any vegetable, they supply a host of nutrients, the bountiful bulbs supporting heart health, blood sugar regulation, and bone density. Onions have been utilized in medicinals for millennia, and when combined with the right ingredients, they make a particularly pungent, immune boosting concoction.? We share a recipe for sweet and spicy Fire Cider in next week's newsletter.
