Jackie survived tremendous loss before coming to Farm Sanctuary, including the death of her calf, John. At sanctuary, Jackie cried for her lost baby. Cows like Jackie form lifelong bonds with family and friends and mourn their loved ones when they pass. Their grief often goes unrecognized in the beef, veal, and dairy industries. These industries force the separation of families to make greater profits. But when Jackie met Dixon, an orphaned calf, she welcomed him into her heart and began to heal, and now these two will always be safe with us. ??

关于我们
Farm Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization and the first farm animal rescue in the United States. Since 1986, we’ve been dedicated to changing the world for farm animals. Here, we know them as sentient beings worthy of compassion and care, not just commodities. Through collaborative efforts, we can create lasting change and pave the way for a brighter future for farm animals everywhere.

Reminder: Every time you choose plant-based, you're not only helping farm animals — but wildlife, too! This World Wildlife Day, let’s talk about some of the biggest threats to wildlife and their homes. Did you know that... ??The USDA kills wildlife that threatens animals raised for food production. Its program — called Wildlife Services — targets wolves, coyotes, cougars, birds, and other wild animals, primarily to benefit animal agriculture. In 2023, the program reported killing nearly 400,000 native animals. ??Beef, soy, and palm oil are responsible for 60% of tropical deforestation. While soy may feel like a “gotcha moment” for non-vegans, 77% of the world’s soybeans are fed to animals raised for food! ??Animal agriculture destroys natural habitats. Agriculture is considered a danger to 24,000 species of animals listed as threatened with extinction on the IUCN Red List. ??The Great Pacific Garbage Patch — a massive accumulation of ocean plastic —weighs around 80 thousand tons, and is approximately 46% fishing nets. The good news is that we can ALL make a difference and help so many different species of animals. It’s never been easier to add more plant-based foods — your impact will go far beyond your plate. ??

Today, we're celebrating Pippa's birthday and beautiful life by honoring all farm animals for who they truly are — someone, not something. ?? In 2022, Pippa found a home at Farm Sanctuary after “failing to thrive” on a farm that raised lambs for meat. She was ill with a severe leg infection, and the farm staff told us that as a “commercial operation,” they lacked the time and funds to invest in her care. When we heard this, our hearts were broken. Farm animals in the agriculture industry (even babies like Pippa) are seen as products for profit rather than the unique individuals they truly are. Once Pippa was in our care, we were so happy to give her the love and support she needed, including the amputation of her right rear leg to improve her quality of life. She now uses a wheelchair that helps her run and play, and she’s found a best friend in Biscuit, a blind sheep who needed a companion, too. Even with all Pippa’s been through in her short life, she’s never lost the sparkle in her eyes.

In 2021, a baby Biscuit was found alone and trembling with fear in a barn after his mom and brother had been auctioned off days prior. If all had gone according to plan, Biscuit likely would’ve been slaughtered for meat before he even reached his first birthday. Instead, Biscuit narrowly avoided this fate thanks to the family who rescued him, showing that a little kindness and compassion can go a long way. He’s someone — not something. ??

As a male born into the dairy industry, Milton was considered “worthless” just for being himself. Most male calves in this situation are slaughtered at an early age for cheap beef or veal since they’ll never produce milk, which means their cost of care outweighs the profit they'd bring in. They're seen as "byproducts." Luckily Milton was rescued moments before a farmer took him away. Now, he's living the life he deserves—which includes never turning down a sweet treat!

Chickens are curious, amazing beings yet some of the most abused animals on the planet. ?? Each year, over 70 billion chickens are slaughtered each year. In the U.S., most birds raised for food spend their lives suffering inside factory farms instead of living the life they really deserve—never getting to enjoy the outdoors or even feel the sun on their wings. At Farm Sanctuary, we love chickens for who they are, and the chickens who call our sanctuary home have freedom, space, and peace to live the lives they deserve! ??
