The Movement kicks off April 4 with Wear Blue Day and runs throughout the month as part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Paint one fingernail blue and wear blue to work that day. John Watson experienced foster care for nearly five years and says it was mostly positive. He had only three placements, while some of his peers experienced more than 30. During those years, he became a founding member and later senior advisor of the Brevard Youth Leadership Council, working with other youth and professionals to lobby members of the Florida Legislature. He also coordinated foster home recruitment efforts and worked to find independent housing options for youth aging out. Now, the 24-year-old UCF graduate is using his bachelor’s degree in political science as a legislative analyst with the Florida Department of Children and Families. He’s just one of many young people who not only thrived in our system of care but is devoting his professional life to helping other youth thrive. Rayla James describes herself as a thriving, 24-year-old foster care alumna. She spent four years in care, moving between group and foster homes, searching for stability, and ultimately aging out at 18. Rayla went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from UCF and now works as the young adult coordinator for the Florida Guardian ad Litem office. She’s using her lived experience to elevate the voice of youth and promote positive changes in the child welfare system. Our Youth Services team was in the house today doing what they do best — making sure our older youth experiencing foster care thrive and successfully transition to adulthood. Congratulations to our new graduating supervisors! They just completed 40 hours of a statewide training course over a three-week period. Topics included setting expectations and goals, internal and external teamwork, workforce wellness and more. Their dedication and care make such a difference in the lives of children and families, and we are so grateful for the unwavering support they and all our caregivers provide.
