Yesterday, our Women in Recovery program had the privilege of concluding Native American Heritage Month with the Tulsa Indian Club. They brought their drum and Jingle dancers, sharing the significance of the drum and dances while weaving in stories of recovery. The drum and dancers provided healing and encouragement to all the women on their recovery journey. It was an incredible experience for everyone. Thank you, Tulsa Powwow Club, for keeping us connected to our culture. Mvto! Wado! Wanishi! Yakoke! #FCS #mentalhealthandmore #MORE #justiceinvolved #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth

"Establishing a sense of safety is our first priority. If participants feel they’re still in danger or stuck in survival mode, they can’t focus on the deep work needed to change their lives," says Micah Mesker, senior program director at?Women in Recovery (WIR)?for the past three years. "Many of our participants are trying to break patterns that have developed over a lifetime. Changing these ingrained ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving is a monumental task, but it’s the foundation of their transformation." The program she is talking about, Women in Recovery, successfully takes women off a path that is heading toward years in prison. Its success relies on strong collaboration with Tulsa County and other neighboring county courts and ongoing communication with judges. Women in Recovery offers qualifying women a year to 18 months of difficult but transformative work including?about 500 hours of individual and group therapy that is all evidence-based. For the 669 women who have graduated from Women in Recovery's regimen the recidivism rate is remarkably low. This program has been a huge success and Mesker believes that "Expanding this program across the country would be wonderful. While Oklahoma has a high incarceration rate, the issues we address are not unique to our state. Women across the nation face similar struggles and challenges." With that in mind, Barrett and Greene Inc. has been publishing a series of interviews with six women who are deeply involved in the program.
