Northern Ingredients began in 1991 with Bob Schafer’s vision to provide bakeries with the ingredients they needed, when they needed them. Starting from a family kitchen and a refurbished van, the business grew into N20, a group of three firms—Northern Ingredients, Northwestern Foods and Ozaima International—focused on supplying and producing food ingredients. Many family members have joined the business including Bob's daughter Claire, who also sits on our center's board. Bob and Claire were in our inaugural peer groups, and Bob continues today as an original member in the Executive Group. You'll find the Schaffers at most Breakfast Series events, and often times bringing new family businesses in to experience the center. Read more about this great family business:

We help family businesses have the right conversations at the right time, in a community that understands their needs.
关于我们
The Family Business Center is for those who want to move family and business forward, together. Our programming engages more than 150 family businesses annually, creating an ecosystem to gather, learn, hold important conversations and share experiences with others. We're here for the now-gens and the next-gens and help bridge any gaps that may exist. While most come from the Twin Cities area, regular attendees come from across Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. Some are Tommie alumni, many are not. Founded in 1991 as one of the first centers in the country, we’ve served almost 900 family businesses, and have never been more vibrant: Our Family Business Breakfast Series is the hallmark of programming, bringing together family businesses of all sizes, seven times a year. They learn from experts & fellow family businesses, while engaging with a community who understands their unique needs. Peer groups are moderated by local family business advisors and include one for executives, two for women and three for next gen members. Participants bring issues and challenges, gain feedback from peers, and essentially become each other's personal board. Our work in underserved communities is bringing new conversations to places that haven’t accessed family business programming in the past. Annual events like our l next generational gathering, women’s leadership event, and full- and half-day workshops provide chances for deeper connection and relationships, while taking family learning to another level. The Advisor Engagement Luncheon hosts an average of 125 attendees at each of three annual events, bringing advisors together to learn with their family business clients. We believe strong family businesses lead to strong communities. And we know that family businesses who engage with our center are better able to tackle the unique issues they face. We hope you can join our community, to hold important discussions and create a plan for your family’s future generations!

We continue our Member Monday series introducing you to another member honored as a 2024 Minnesota Family Business of the Year: Ideal Workplace Solutions. When Rick Harris relocated from California to Minnesota in 2009, he faced the challenge of starting over in a new market. After nearly 30 years in the office interiors business, he launched Ideal Workplace Solutions which he's since grown into a trusted partner for both private and public clients. Three of Rick’s children, Tim, Myisha and Jamie Harris, joined the company with a commitment to a culture of customer service, collaboration and community impact. Beyond business, Rick co-founded the Minnesota Minority Goods & Services Association (MMGSA), advocating for and mentoring business owners of color. The Family Business Center partnered with MMGSA on its Black Family Business Success events over the last few years. The Harris family have been regular attendees at the Breakfast Series for three years and this year Tim joined our center’s board. We double-dipped on events yesterday, and (not biased at all) scored big on both! Beginning with our Advisor Luncheon, was an outstanding discussion on "The Next Stage of Governance" with Terri McEnaney of Bailey Nurseries and Ann Sargeant of Lakes Gas, moderated wonderfully by Larry Hause, JD. Larry discussed the stages of governance and how to balance the change of a primary decision-maker, and Terri & Ann shared their family journeys through those stages to land at what is needed now, while keeping options open for future needs that could lead to different structures. Wonderfully open dialogue we all learned from. In the afternoon we hit Top Golf for our second annual NextGen Gathering. Some golfed. Some just gathered. All enjoyed the community and conversations among their fellow next gens. Another great day in the Family Business Center. Thanks to all of those who made it so!

On this Member Monday we introduce you to another of this year's Minnesota Family Business Awards honorees, a family business from greater Minnesota doing work across the country, the third generation led Duininck Companies. Beginning in 1926 with road construction, Duininck has diversified to add water management, construction, golf course management, real estate, concrete and more. The family has 13 members who work across the different entities and created a structured way for members of its fourth generation to be introduced to the business over a two-year period to see if there's a good fit within one of the family's companies. You'll find members of the Duininck family attending various Breakfast events, including Trevor, Jeremy, Chris, Judd and Jason Duininck, along with the company's director of family engagement, Tricia Nelson. Say hi to the Duininck family the next time you see them, and find out more about their family in this Twin Cities Business article:
