Fairview Housing Partners hosted a Resident Resource Day for residents living at Rica Vista and Surfside Apartments in Alameda, CA. Resident Resource Days provide residents with an opportunity to learn about services from local organizations and connect with their community. The event brought representatives from several nonprofit organizations, including Alameda Food Bank, Alamedas Boys & Girls Club, Alameda County Community Food Bank, LifeSTEPS, Building Futures, Housing Authority of Alameda, Alameda Family Services, and the Alameda Police Department.?

Last quarter, Fairview Housing Partners hosted a Resident Resource Day for residents living at?InterQuest?Ridge in Colorado Springs. Representatives from?Care & Share,?Pikes Peak Library District,?League of Women Voters,?El Paso Public Health,?Tri Lakes Cares,?Benefits in Action?and the?Colorado Springs Police?and?Fire Departments?educated and engaged with the?InterQuest?Ridge community. The Family Resource Day provided residents the opportunity to learn about affordable healthcare, food security, voting rights and other community aid resources. Family Resource Days are an important part of our resident centered approach to services and housing.??

???Lincoln Avenue Communities proudly continues its partnership with the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum by recently sponsoring an exciting field trip for Arlington-area children to the All-Star Village during Major League Baseball's All-Star Week. ? ??This field trip is part of LAC's ongoing efforts with the Baseball Hall of Fame to support youth education and development initiatives nationwide. Twenty young residents from Paddock on Park Row, an affordable housing community owned by LAC, had the unique opportunity to attend this interactive event at Choctaw Stadium in Arlington, TX. They explored baseball history and engaged in various games and clinics with former MLB players and MLB youth ambassadors. ? ???Since 2021, LAC has partnered with the?Baseball?Hall of Fame to?establish?an?educational afterschool program at our properties?that teaches?core-curriculum subjects through the lens of baseball, utilizing the?Baseball?Hall of Fame's award-winning curriculum.?Thank you to our dedicated LAC team members who helped bring this program to life: Thom Amdur and Emma Schumaker. This is a really important topic that affordable housing stakeholders need to stay out in front of. When advocates talk about affordable housing today we tend to emphasize how supply constrained the market is and how we need to build 3 million new homes to meet demand. While we absolutely need to build more housing, it is also essential that we ensure there are adequate resources available to preserve and extend the affordability of the existing affordable rental portfolio. We owe it to the residents of these communities to reinvest in their homes as the age so they are maintained at a high level of quality and remain affordable in the long-term. Compared to building replacement housing preservation also an efficient use of scarce government resources. I commend The Associated Press and Jesse Bedayn and Arushi Gupta for their thoughtful coverage of this issue. As you can see from their data the scale of the challenge is large and so we will need a big solution. This includes Congress expanding existing resources like the LIHTC and PABs for preservation and I also urge my friends at the state housing finance agencies and National Council of State Housing Agencies (NCSHA) to consider to invest in a long-term strategic preservation plan to ensure that they have identified their most high value community assets and their most at-risk communities so that they can plan accordingly. During my time at National Housing & Rehabilitation Association I developed a series of metrics to evaluate the preservation risk of a portfolio. Ping me if you are interested in learning more.

Introducing Thom Amdur, Executive Director of Fairview Housing Partners. Thom is a nationally recognized leader in affordable housing and community development policy. Prior to joining Fairview, he served as President of the National Housing & Rehabilitation Association (NH&RA), where he received the NHP Foundation’s Affordable Housing Advocacy Award in 2018. Thom serves on the Board of Directors of numerous community development organizations including the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition and the International Center for Appropriate and Sustainable Technology. He is an advisory board member and peer reviewer for the Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future’s Certified Organization for Resident Engagement and Services (CORES) Certification and serves on the Washington Metro Region advisory board for the Equitable Development Initiative.
