Our choices add up! You go to the grocery store and pick out a Fairtrade chocolate bar. The brand that made that chocolate bar sourced their cocoa from Fairtrade cooperatives. This means that they paid the Fairtrade Premium on top of the selling price for the cocoa. You eat another chocolate bar. So does your friend. And your neighbor. All of a sudden, cocoa cooperatives alone are earning more than $55 million in Fairtrade Premium in just one year! (This is not hypothetical! It is, in fact, referencing real 2022 Fairtrade Premium data for cocoa cooperatives). So, that’s the big picture. Let’s zoom in. Sometimes cooperatives decide to invest their Fairtrade Premium in social projects, like the construction of a medical clinic. Other times, they decide to make a nuts-and-bolts investment in the production process of their crop. For example, one way that ACOPAGRO (a Fairtrade cooperative in Peru) invested its Fairtrade Premium in recent years was through the construction of a new building that provides members with a more advanced facility to process, ferment, dry, and store their cocoa beans.
